On the yellow moon, J.P. comments that it feels like they’re in heaven while Koji argues. Koichi, of course, is still remembering the same comment. Tommy points out the destruction of the Digital World, but when Zoe says it’s all over, Takuya says it can’t be. Like the leaders of the past three seasons, he won’t give up the fight. Koji backs him up, and Koichi still doesn’t seem to care. The whole thing begins to look like “Oikawa’s Shame” when the 02 Digis are too scared to fight and only Davis believes in the Digimon. This time, not only Gogglehead believes it, but Lone Wolf too. Takuya asks his Spirits if he’s wrong to believe in them all, and the Spirits shake their heads. Talk about talking to yourself.
The Royal Knights ask Lucemon for the key to the human world only to get him to basically tell them to shut up. Crusadermon reminds him of his promise to them, but the angry little kid blasts at them for questioning him. He then tells them the best thing since…oh, maybe Myotismon: “Now get to that moon and do your job!” Well, there’s no arguing who’s in charge there. Crusadermon asks if he’ll give them the key when they’re done, and he asks if she doubts him. Then Dynasmon begins berating her for questioning him and says they must obey Lucemon without question. (Note: odd little tidbit here—he pronounces it “Lucymon” instead of “Lu-say-mon.” Guess we can call him Lucy from now on) They both re-enforce their belief in their master, and Lucy tells them to go and destroy the kids. Typical bad guy behavior.
Zoe points out a bunch of bubbles (Sam, Ken, is that you?), so Patamon flies toward it. Naturally, they all follow to find a flower-covered field with tons of Baby and In-Training Digimon and digieggs. The scene looks like it’s straight out of Cody’s Mental Illusion in “Last Temptation of the DigiDestined.” Each kid pairs up with a Digimon: Koji with a Tokomon, J.P. with a Motimon, Zoe with a Poromon (scary that she squeezes him like Yolei), Takuya with Chibomon, Koichi with a Poyomon (despite the fact that he’s finally happy, this is all going to blow up in his face—literally), and Tommy with an Upamon. Even Bokomon and Neemon team up: with a Pabumon and Minomon respectively. Takuya’s very happy to see to see that all the Babies made it while the others start playing with them. Neemon’s rocking Minomon to sleep, Bokomon plays peek-a-boo with Pabumon, and the twins have some bad luck with theirs. Koji finds that he’s a rotten babysitter because Tokomon’s crying, while Koichi isn’t doing much better. This scene is just so funny, I have to write it down:
Koji: (in a cynical voice while Tokomon’s crying) “I sure have a way with babies, huh?”
Koichi: “I wonder if he’s hungry. Or maybe he needs…” He lifts Poyomon up to look and see if the thing is wearing a diaper, only to learn no. A white powder that can only be baby poop hits him in the face.
Patamon has the best luck of all of them. He finds a green egg with Ophanimon’s symbol on it and a pink one with the Holy Ring design on it. The eggs hatch, revealing Salamon and Lopmon respectively. While Lopmon is voiced by Michelle Ruff again, Salamon is played by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn rather than Edie Mirman of seasons 1 and 2. Oh well, guess you can’t win them all. The former Celestial Digimon form a tower with Lopmon on bottom, then Patamon, and Salamon at the top, reminding me of Henry’s line from “Back to Nature, Back to Battle”: “And break up that happy little totem pole?”
The Legendary Warriors have a discussion on why the three were reborn (and yes, Koichi’s all clean now), but Koji says it doesn’t matter as long as they grow up together as friends. Takuya says it’s their responsibility to make sure that happens, and they all promise to restore the Digital World. Unfortunately, the Babies run, and Lopmon and Patamon inform them of the Royal Knights. Salamon asks if they’ll fight or run, reminding Takuya of the choice he made in episode 1. We have a very long, “Tamers think about why they fight Evangelion-style” flashback featuring clips from “All Aboard,” “Better an Egg Than an Eggshell,” some episode I can’t identify—maybe “Operation: Rescue Ophanimon,” and “Takuya and Koji’s Evolution Revolution” that can all be summed up as the Shinsengumi’s motto “Eliminate all evil immediately” from Rurouni Kenshin. Next comes a flashback to “Home Again, Takuya Returns” and “Jerks and the Beanstalk” as Takuya realizes that though they thought about it often enough, they never went back to their original lives.
After all that, the Knights finally arrive. Again, the very long “Wind into Flame” thing, and we get the Unified Spirit Evolution (the more I think about it, the more I notice it looks like the opening to .hack//SIGN. Can’t we have “Obsession playing in the background?). By the way, this time the voices are correct.
Making a long story short here, they fight, actually win, and then Lucy shows up. Before EmperorGreymon has a chance to purify the Knights’ data, Lucemon yells, “It’s mine” and does his Grand Cross attack to blast away our heroes. In a style befitting that of MaloMyotismon back in “Oikawa’s Shame,” Lucy scans the Knights’ data to go to his Chaos Mode. And so, the Crimson Knights are disbanded—I mean, the Royal Knights are no more. Personally, I was hoping his voice would sound like Malo’s, but Mona Marshall continues to do Lucemon. Oh well. At least she knows how to do an insane evil laugh even better than Derek Stephen Prince did.
For a while, the Digis argue with him over his dictatorial ideas before he blasts the Zetas. They try Dragon Fire Crossbow and Starburst Hunter only to get no results. EmperorG runs in for an attack despite MagnaG’s orders, only to learn he should have listened. Lucy uses his Paradise Lost Punch, which sounds impressive but is no more than the rapid fire punches from G Gundam. EmperorGreymon is fading in and out, and then Lucy does a rather odd kick to launch him into the sky before using the force of gravity to bring him down to the ground on his head. That was one heck of a hit because it split the ground right in two, causing a huge moonquake. Takuya watches EmperorG’s data disintegrate from his body before his Fractal Code ring appears. Lucy begins scanning it, but MagnaG runs in to receive the same treatment. Apparently, it’s worse on him because the entire moon is destroyed while he lies there unconscious (remember that, everyone, he’s unconscious). The moon is then destroyed so completely it’s about to explode…
