Continuing from where we left off....

Captain Hitsugaya slips out in the night leaving his captain's robe behind. Ichigo catches him, but before anything can be done, the substitute soul reaper is attacked by the same two women arrancar that attacked the Shrine.

Placed in charge of the investigation, Renji accompanied by Rukia find Ichigo in the World of the Living. Ichigo gives them the Robe Hitsugaya left behind, and explains what had happened including the name Kusaka that the young Captain uttered while he was unconscious.

Thanks to Nanao, Captain Shunsui discovered the truth about Kusaka. However, he was attacked shortly afterwards by Kusaka, who used Hyourinmaru, a zanpakuto with identical powers to Hitsugaya's.

At about the same time Captain Shunsui is attacked, the Soul Reapers have found Hitsugaya. There is a fight as the young runaway refuses to go willingly. Not only is he injured more before he escapes, but the Soul Reaper's Izuru Kira and Shuhei Hisagi are severely injured as well. Things do not look good for Hitsugaya!

As it turns out, Kusaka was a former classmate and good friend of Toshiro's, but both wielded the same Zanpakuto, which is forbidden in the Soul Society. The two were ordered to fight to the death, but Toshiro refused. However, when Kusaka attacked, Toshiro was forced to fight. The Central 46 Chambers of the Soul Society declared Toshiro the true owner of Hyorinmaru resulting in Kusaka's execution by the Military Corps.

It's while battling Kusaka that Ichigo sees a vision of what occurred between Toshiro and his assailant. It's that vision that helped him understand why Toshiro was acting the way he is.
