Chapter Seventeen
“But, Mom, it’s not fair!” Aries cried. It was the day after Nina had returned home and her brother was being his usual whiny self. “If she gets to stay home, I should be able to stay, too!”
“Aries, she has a sprained ankle and she’s getting sick,” his mother said. “If it was you who was staying home because of that, I would make you sister go to school, but it’s her and there’s nothing wrong with you, so go to school.”
“It’s not fair!” Aries cried.
“Aries,” his mother said giving him a warning look.
Aries threw his backpack to the ground. “Mom.”
“Aries, you are going to school and that is final,” his mom said. “Otherwise you’ll end up going to summer school again.”
Aries shot her a glare, grabbed his backpack, and left the house going to school grumbling something along the lines of his mother spoiling his sister.
His mother sighed and closed the door.
“Mom?” a voice asked.
Mrs. Summers spun around to see her daughter who was using the wall to help her stand. She quickly ran to Nina’s side putting her arm around her shoulder to help her walk as they went into Nina’s room. “Honey, you’re getting sick and should stay in bed. Plus, you walking on that ankle isn’t going to help it heal any sooner.”
“I’m not sick, Mom,” Nina said before she let out a cough.
“Oh, you aren’t, huh?” her mother asked.
“Mom, I have a very important test to take in English,” Nina cried as she imagined what Yura would do to her if she didn’t take it or what she would do to her if she failed it.
“Your health is more important,” her mother said softly. “Now, I have to go to work. I’ll be back in three hours.” With that said, she covered her daughter up with the blankets, kissed her on the forehead, and left to go to work.
Nina sighed and waited for the sound of the car pulling out of the driveway. As soon as she heard the car leave, she got out of bed, grabbed her backpack, and ran to school. I am not missing this test. It’s very important and I don’t want to have to go to summer school. Besides, English is what I’m good at even if it doesn’t have the best teacher in the world. That’s why I usually always have an A+ in it. At this thought, she smiled. And there’s nothing Yura can do to make it any lower. She then remembered Yura was the teacher and thought gloomily, Yes, there is. She’s the teacher and can make me fail even if I wasn’t supposed to. She groaned. My life stinks. I have to go to school and pass the ninth grade, I have to keep up with practice in our band and keep up with all the scheduled concerts and sign autographs and all this other stuff for that, I have to go to Feudal Era Japan and try to get rid of Naraku and also try to keep the jewel away from him as well as find this “chosen one” and whoever their parents are, and I have to keep up in my social life as well as family life, plus, I have a job! My boss is probably going to fire me! She groaned again and thought sarcastically, Isn’t my life wonderful? She quickly ran into class and took her seat at her desk just in time as the bell rang for all late students.
Yura raised an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.
“Thank goodness you got here just in time,” Anna whispered. “You should’ve seen what she did to the last person who was late.”
Nina looked at her surprised and whispered, “Why aren’t you with Inuyasha and the others?”
“Hello? We have a test in this class,” Anna said. “Do you know what Mrs. Yura would do to us if we missed it?”
Nina nodded and didn’t ask any further questions as Yura was beginning to pass out the tests.
Once she was done, she sat down behind the desk. “There will be no talking or you’ll get a zero. Eyes on your own papers and if I see you looking at anyone else’s papers, I’ll give you a zero. And lastly, do your best. Hopefully, none of you will get ‘F’s as I’m sure none of you want to be around during the parent teacher conference. Right?” She raised an eyebrow as she smiled. The class nodded. “Very well. Begin the test.”
Nina looked down at her test and raised an eyebrow. What is Mrs. Yura’s favorite color? What kind of question is that? This is supposed to be an English test. Not a “How well do you know Yura?” test. She rolled her eyes. Sheesh. Well, if I get an “F” on this, I’ll just show the questions to my mom and dad and they’ll realize that it was a phony test. Umm, so I guess the answer would be black. After all, she does wear black a lot, here and in Feudal Japan. And so, she did the phony test trying to do the best she could as she remembered how Yura was in Feudal Japan and how she was now.
“Times up,” Yura said as she began picking up the papers before anyone else could finish answering any more answers. She sat down at her desk as soon as she was done picking them up. “I hope none of you failed it.” The bell rang and everyone began putting their stuff away. As soon as everyone was done, they looked towards Yura. She smiled. “Now, tell me, since when does the bell dismiss you?”
Everyone remained silent as they looked around for help.
Nina sighed. It was official; Yura was definitely going to be the first teacher she had ever disliked.
Inukai was sitting on a tree branch as he watched Izumi, Kai, Sakura, and Albert play tag. He sighed and looked towards Sango and Miroku and quickly regretted it as the two were kissing. He turned his attention to Inuyasha, Kagome, Shippo, Koga, and Sesshomaru to see they were just talking about everything that had happened to them in the past weeks and how it must’ve been at least two months now making it December which meant that it was winter and it would be a lot harder getting into Naraku’s castle due to the snow that came every winter. Inukai frowned and turned to lie down on his back. He hadn’t gone back to the present time like Sharon, Sota, Anna, and Nina had to go to school. In fact, he could care less about it. It was a pain for him to go to school. He disliked all of his teachers and they disliked him. He wasn’t exactly the best student either as he had at least one “F”, two “D”s, and the rest “C”s. He sighed as he wondered why he seemed to have these sort of things in school while Nina and the others probably didn’t. Maybe it was just him. After all, it was a miracle he had even gotten into the ninth grade as he had gotten very bad grades in the past as well as several referrals and so on forth. It had always been that way. Even since pre-school he had been that way. His father didn’t seem to mind, though. But, then again, he had always been gone and usually never was home. His mother, on the other hand, had always been home. That is, until the day she died. He had been very young when it had happened so he didn’t remember her all that well, but he did remember how everything was the day she died.
His father was holding her in his arms. She was bleeding from her wound that was where her heart was. Everything was up in fire. It looked like they had been in a small village when it had happened.
Inukai, at the time, was only two or three years old. He was the youngest of four children. He was holding onto his youngest sister’s hand. He remembered she had white hair just like him. His older brother had black hair. The oldest of them who was his other sister who also had black hair. He wasn’t exactly sure how he and his other sister had gotten white hair as his mother and father both had black hair.
His father held their mother and began crying as she said something that Inukai couldn’t comprehend as she was speaking very softly. His mother than turned pale and her arm hung limply from where it had been. His father cried out and then there was darkness.
That was all he could remember for the next day, he found himself alone at home. His father never came back. He found himself living on the streets soon enough and yet he had managed to steal expensive clothes from the stores as well as food. That had been and still was how he had survived. He was the most popular guy at school and they had no idea how he lived. When he held parties, they were usually at a mansion he had snuck into once he had found out when the servants and so on would be home. He never cared to clean up after the party and never really cared when the owners got home to see how much of a mess it was. He was gone by then. Living out on the streets once again. He was surprised that he had been able to keep himself clean as well as his clothes and the fact that he kept his hair well groomed. Then again, he was half dog demon and dogs did live on the streets and still survived. Plus, if he looked to Inuyasha, he could tell that dog demons had to live out in the wild all their lives until someone came and took them in and so they adapted to live the life he was living right now.
He sighed and looked towards the direction the well was in. I live a better life here than I do there. Sota doesn’t even know how I really live and, yet, he’s my best bud. You think he’d know everything there is to know about me. He closed his eyes as he began to take a nap.
“So, I take it that your ankle is better,” Anna said as she and Nina began walking to third period.
“Not really,” Nina said as she began biting on her lower lip to keep herself from crying out in pain and trying not to show it. Truth was, her ankle was still shooting pain up her leg and she felt like she was going to fall down any second. And the fact that she had a headache, felt like she was going to cough any minute as well as having a sore throat didn’t help at all. She also felt sick to her stomach, but she wouldn’t give into it. She was going to stay in school today, no matter what. Not even if Inukai cam or even if Inuyasha came. She would not leave, even if her mother came. No one would be able to make her leave. At least until school was over, that is.
“You came to school even if you’re still in pain?” Anna asked. “Did your mom make you?”
“No,” Nina muttered. “She was trying to make me stay home, but I refused to.” She wasn’t going to mention that her mother also tried to make her stay home because she was sick. How she had gotten sick the day after Inukai had taken her home was beyond her.
“Well, I have to go now,” Anna said as she began turning a corner. “See ya.”
Nina nodded and went into her class. She quickly took her seat and grabbed her stuff relieved that the pain in her ankle had subsided for now.
Inukai yawned. “I’m bored. That’s for sure.” He sat up and saw Albert near by. He smiled as a thought came to him. He then jumped down and hid in the bushes following Albert and waiting for the other kids to leave him. As soon as they did, he quickly jumped at Albert and grabbed him by his tail as he let out a yelp of surprise. “Heh, you should be more careful. I could’ve been a big scary mean hungry demon.”
“Let me go, meanie,” Albert said shooting him a glare.
“And what will you do if I don’t?” Inukai asked smirking.
“I’ll tell Nina-chan,” Albert said.
“Heh, like I care if you do,” Inukai said.
“And I’ll tell her to sit you,” Albert added as he crossed his small arms, closed his eyes, and smiled proud of what he had just said.
“Do that, and I’ll make sure you have a slow painful death,” Inukai said showing the little cat demon his claws.
Albert gulped. “Yeah, well, Nina will hate you then.”
Inukai growled and threw the cat demon to the ground. “Feh. Like I have time for you anyway.” He went into his usual Inuyasha pose.
Albert smiled knowing he had gotten Inukai where he wanted him as his dog-ears were drooping at the very thought of Nina hating him.
Inukai sighed as he watched Albert run off. He had to be really bored if all he could think of was to tease the cat demon. He then let out a low growl. He should’ve hurt Albert for blackmailing him by using Nina. Then Albert had blackmailed him again by saying that if he did kill him, Nina would hate him. He didn’t even know why he let that get to him. He’s going to pay one of these days. He went over to Inuyasha and the others. “Hey, I’m going to go to my era for a while. I need to… catch up on some homework.” At this, he rolled his eyes. Yeah, right. Like I would do homework.
“Okay,” Kagome said nodding. She remembered how she always had to travel back in forth through time for schoolwork and to gather the shards of the jewel.
“Feh. Like we care,” Inuyasha said.
“Well, good bye to you, too,” Inukai said as he turned to leave.
“Whatever,” Inuyasha muttered.
Nina let out a yawn as she watched the science movie for none other than the most boringest class on Earth, fifth period. She laid her head on her desk hoping she wouldn’t fall asleep…
Nina saw two dark figures. One was tall and appeared to have long black hair. The other one was slightly shorter than the other and had long white hair. The first one held out his hand showing a glowing purple object. The white haired one reached for their sword.
“Now, now, no need to get violent,” the first one said.
“I won’t let you get away with it,” the other one said letting out a low growl.
Nina walked towards the two. “Excuse me, but, um, where are we?”
Either the two were ignoring her or they didn’t hear her as they were continuing their conversation.
“I told her to give it to me,” the first one said. “She didn’t and so she got what she was asking for.”
“What? Who’s she? Give what? What are you two talking about and who are you guys?” Nina asked confused.
“No. You were the one asking for it and I won’t let you get away, murderer,” the second one said.
“What? Murderer? He killed someone? Who? Why?” Nina asked feeling herself get even more confused.
“She died for the same reasons your stupid mother, sister, and brother died,” the first one said.
“So you’re the one who killed…”
Who it was the first one killed, Nina didn’t know as the scene began changing and she soon found herself back in class. She looked around trying to find the cause of what had woken her up to see that it had been Anna.
“I know it’s boring, but you have to stay up or you’ll get in trouble,” Anna whispered.
“Sorry,” Nina muttered as she began trying to sort out everything that had happened in her dream. She didn’t know who the two were except that their voices were oddly familiar. One of them seemed angry while the other was pleased. She sighed as the bell rang. She quickly put her stuff away and when they were dismissed she was more than happy to leave.
“So, what were you dreaming about,” Anna asked as they headed to the lunchroom.
“I was dreaming a very confusing dream,” Nina said as she began describing her dream to her.
“So, this is the school she goes to?” Inukai asked as looked at the high school. “Not much, is it?” He entered it.
“So, what do you think?” Nina asked as they took their seats.
“You have weird dreams,” Anna said. “First, you have dreams about Inuyasha and Kagome and her weird supposedly death, you dream about things to happen in the future, and now you have this. You seriously have weird dreams.”
“And all of them have been true,” Nina said. “I always dream about future stuff. That’s why I usually get déjà vu. ‘Cause I already so it happen once before. It even happens when I didn’t dream it at all. It’s like, some weird power I have.”
“Maybe you should be a psychic when you get older,” Anna suggested.
“They only happen when I least suspect it,” Nina said. I guess that’s how it is anyway.
“What are you doing here?!” a voice suddenly demanded.
Nina and Anna turned around to see Inukai.
Nina looked at him as confusion was written all over her face. The scene changed again and she saw the two figures again. This time, though, she could faintly make out their clothes. The first one wore at least three layers of whatever Japanese style of clothing it was telling her that he must’ve been rich. The second one wore orange and a white shirt underneath that. They began going on in the same conversation again.
“She died for the same reasons your stupid mother, sister, and brother died,” the first one said.
“So you’re the one who killed Mom, Ka-“
The scene changed again and Nina didn’t get to hear the rest of the name. Soon, she saw someone’s face and jumped back in fear. She saw it was only Inukai and put a hand to her racing heart waiting for it to calm. “Don’t ever do that.”
Inukai raised an eyebrow. “You’re the one who was daydreaming. Not me. I was just try to snap you back into reality.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have,” Nina said crossing her arms.
“Okay. If you want to look like some staring freak, that’s okay with me,” Inukai said.
“Listen, you, I was having a very-“ She then noticed he was wearing his human disguise and let out a sigh of relief before she continued. “I was having a very important vision.”
“A vision? Of what?” Inukai asked.
“Hi! You want to go hang out with me and the girls instead of these losers,” another voice said.
Inukai turned to face who was talking to him to see a short skinny shallow skinned blonde head girl with green eyes. She wore a blue tank top, short shorts, and sandals.
“My name’s Breanna. What’s yours?” the girl asked him.
Nina began fuming. She calmed herself and went between the two. “Hello, Breanna. What’s up?”
“Oh. Nothing. You know, except for the fact that I’m trying to keep this cute guy from hanging around in the wrong crowd,” Breanna said.
“Oh. Well, I can do that for you,” Nina said as she turned around and grabbed Inukai by the arm.
Inukai raised an eyebrow.
“Oh. No. I think I can do that for you,” Breanna said as she quickly ran over to Inukai and took his other arm.
“Well, I’m trying to stop him from joining you skinny or should I say fragile snubs,” Nina said.
Breanna snarled. “Well, it’s better for him to join us than you geeks.”
“I do not bite off chicken heads, thank you very much,” Nina said as she tugged on Inukai’s arm.
“Yeah, well, I-I… at least I’m an honor student,” Breanna said.
“Yeah and I’m glad I’m not otherwise I might have become a snub, too,” Nina said.
“At least I can get a boyfriend,” Breanna said.
Nina lowered her eyes as she began finding the ground quite interesting.
Inukai growled and freed his arm from Breanna as he put a hand over Nina’s. “Maybe she doesn’t want a boyfriend and would rather stick with her studies, you witch.”
Breanna gasped. “Witch?! I’m no witch!”
“Yeah, you’re worse,” Inukai said.
“I’ll tell,” Breanna threatened.
“And I don’t care,” Inukai said.
Breanna left fuming madly.
Inukai sighed and looked down at Nina to meet her hazel eyes. “Are-are you okay?”
Nina nodded. “Why did you… stick up for me?”
“Because I’m your friend and that’s what friends do,” Inukai said.
Nina smiled.
“Plus, I’m a dog and dog’s need to protect the puppies,” Inukai added smirking at the glare Nina shot him.
“I am not a puppy,” Nina said.
Inukai just smiled and said, “So, why were you two fighting over me anyway?”
“Breanna is the leader of the most snubbed girls who go for the first cute guy they see. Breanna, of course, always gets the first say and unless she has one, no one else can have one. I was trying to protect you from her,” Nina said. She then looked down at the ground again. “She used to be my friend. We were good friends, but her other friends didn’t like me. So… they kicked me out. I was the only one who wasn’t snobby. I guess that’s why. They always did only allow the pretty girls to hang out with them. So, maybe it was because I wasn’t pretty enough.”
Inukai lifted her chin up gently as he looked into her eyes. “You are pretty. No. You’re beautiful and the only reason they got rid of you was because they were jealous of you. Isn’t that why you always get asked out? Because you’re you and not them?”
Nina smiled and nodded. “Thank you, Inukai.”
Inukai smirked as a thought just occurred to him. “So, they thought I was cute, huh? I guess you think the same if you felt you had to protect me.”
Nina felt herself begin to blush and shook her head. “That’s not it at all. They just have bad taste in men. That’s all. I was protecting you so they wouldn’t help you feel up with pride.”
Inukai smirked at the blush that was spreading across her face and knew she wasn’t telling the truth. “Whatever you say.” Another thought then occurred to him and he quickly grabbed Nina by the shoulders. “Why aren’t you at home?! What about your ankle?!” He then sniffed the air and smelled a light scent of illness on her and knew she was trying cover it up from his sense of smell as she was wearing mango scented body spray. “And you’re sick, too.”
Nina began biting on her lower lip. “I’m not at home because I came here to learn and my ankle doesn’t hurt anymore. And I’m no sick.”
Inukai lightly kicked her ankle and saw her wince in pain. “Your ankle doesn’t hurt, eh? Doesn’t look that way to me.”
Nina narrowed her eyes as she tried to ignore the pain she felt go up her leg. “I’m fine. I had an important test and I had to get my homework and turn in the past nights’ homework.”
“Will you think about yourself for once?!” Inukai demanded.
“I was!” Nina cried. “I was thinking about my future!”
Inukai growled.
“Will you two keep your voices low,” Anna hissed. “Before everyone can hear you?”
“Shut up!” Inukai cried.
“Don’t tell her to shut up!” Nina cried.
“I’ll tell her to shut up if I want to shut up!” Inukai yelled.
“You are so rude!” Nina yelled even louder.
Anna dug into her backpack and grabbed out her fifth Harry Potter book and hid behind it as everyone began to stare at Nina and Inukai.
“What makes you think I care!” Inukai shouted.
“I don’t care if you don’t care!” Nina shouted.
“Good!” Inukai said.
“Fine!” Nina said.
The two faced their backs to each other and went into Inuyasha’s famous pose.
“I am glad that you two are done,” a voice said.
The two turned around to see an elderly woman with white hair, brown eyes, and wearing a gray long sleeved professional suit and a matching skirt.
“Mrs. Carla, I am so sorry,” Nina said.
Inukai raised an eyebrow. “Who’s the hag?”
“I am Mrs. Carla. The vice principal around here,” the old lady said.
“Oh,” Inukai said. “Umm, right.”
“I take it you are new around here,” Mrs. Carla said.
Inukai smirked. “Yeah. The name’s Inukai.”
“Well, you and Miss Summers can come with me to my office,” Mrs. Carla said.
Nina looked down at the ground and Inukai looked towards her as the two began going to the office.
“Take a seat. I’ll talk to Miss Summers first,” Mrs. Carla said as they entered the office. She led Nina to her office and took a seat. Nina did the same. “Now, what were you two arguing about?”
“Well, umm, it was about my ankle and health at first, but then it turned into an argument about how rude he was, and, well, that’s when it ended,” Nina said.
Mrs. Carla nodded.
“I’m really sorry. We hadn’t meant to disturb anyone and it was just one of those arguments friends have,” Nina said.
Mrs. Carla nodded. “You may go. I will have to talk to your friend a little longer.”
Nina gave her a questioning look, but left. She went over to Inukai. “You’re next. Umm, and I’m sorry I said you were rude and that I worried you.”
Inukai stood up and nodded. “It’s okay. I guess.”
“Mr. Inukai,” Mrs. Carla called.
“Well, that’s me. I’ll see ya,” Inukai said as he began leaving to go to the vice principal’s office.
“I’ll wait for you,” Nina said as she took a seat.
Inukai nodded and entered the office.
“Take a seat,” Mrs. Carla said.
“Nah, that’s okay. I’ll stand,” Inukai said.
“Very well,” Mrs. Carla said. “So, tell me, what were you two arguing about?”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but we were arguing over her well being and it kind of ended when she called me rude,” Inukai said. “It really wasn’t that long.”
“Hmm, I see,” Mrs. Carla said. “Breanna said you called her a witch. Is that true?”
“Yeah, it’s true all right,” Inukai said. “She is a witch. And the people who go out with her and are her friends are idiots. She used to be Nina’s friend and she let all her friends just walk over her like she was trash. And she’s not. She shouldn’t be treated like that. If they knew her well enough, they wouldn’t have. And if they still did it would be because they’re jealous of her. Because she has real friends and a lot of them, too. Because every guy wants to win her heart and not theirs. That’s why they got rid of her. Because she’s more popular than they’ll ever be.”
Mrs. Carla raised an eyebrow and nodded. “Very well. We shall talk again.”
Inukai left the office feeling light as a feather. He spotted Nina and ran over to her. “Heh, it’s a good thing I don’t really go to this school.”
Nina’s face filled with concern. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Inukai said as he and Nina left the office, “that that witch told on me. And your vice principal wants to talk to me again.”
Nina’s eyes widened. “Oh, no.”
“Don’t worry,” Inukai said. “I’ll be sure I don’t ever return to your school.”
Nina then looked down at the ground. “Umm, did you mean any of that stuff?”
“What stuff?” Inukai asked.
“That every guy wants to win my heart, that I’m popular?” Nina asked. She looked up into his golden eyes. “That I’m beautiful?”
Inukai smirked. “Yeah. I meant it when I said every guy wants to win your heart and that you’re popular even if you don’t know it.” He began blushing. “And it was the truth when I said you were beautiful.” He began blushing even more.
Nina smiled and hugged him. “Thank you so much.”
Inukai looked down at her a bit startled by her sudden outburst, but slowly hugged her back. “You’re welcome.”
Nina looked down at her watch and saw that school was out and… “Eeek! I’m late for work!”
Inukai quickly took his arms off her and covered his sensitive ears. “Don’t scream like that. You hurt my ears.”
Nina raised an eyebrow. “Your ears are that sensitive that they can hurt even underneath a wig?”
Inukai nodded as he tried to massage them underneath the wig he wore.
Nina put a hand underneath his wig and slowly lifted it off his head.
Inukai stopped her by grabbing her wrist. “Don’t.”
“Please,” Nina said. “I-I want to see the real you. I like you the way you are.”
Inukai sighed and took his hand off her wrist. He then nodded. “Go ahead.”
Nina lifted it off his head. She smiled at his dog-ears that turned to face her. She gulped and reached up to tweak one of his ears. Inukai leaned into her hand and began purring. Nina smiled thinking it was cute that a dog demon could purr. Inukai soon realized what he was doing and quickly took his head away from her hand causing her hand to fall to her side while she looked at him confused.
“What is it?” Nina asked.
“Didn’t you say you had work?” Inukai said.
Nina nodded and resisted the urge to tweak his ears again.
Inukai sighed and kneeled down. “Climb on. I have to take you before you get any later.”
Nina nodded and did.
Inukai then began jumping form building to building taking her to work.
