Inuyasha: A New Beginning

Chapter One

The sun shone brightly in a young girl’s face as she woke up. She got up annoyed. “Stupid sun. Couldn’t it have stayed down just a bit longer?” She yawned and stretched. “I was having a really good dream, too.” She changed her clothes as she tried to remember what her dream was about. After she was done brushing her long dark brown hair and putting on her gray and blue tennis shoes, she frowned. The only thing she could remember was a boy with white hair, dog-ears, golden eyes, and wearing red. He was saying something, but she just couldn’t remember what it was. She shrugged and gave up. No use in trying to remember unimportant stuff, she thought. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled.  She was wearing a white long sleeved shirt with blue roses styled like the kind ladies wore in medieval times in Europe with one exception, it had two strings going down with two bead hanging off them making a cowboy-like style. She also wore a floral, wavy, miniskirt, with her socks pulled up as high as they would reach (which wasn’t very high,) and she had her long hair down. She moved her bangs out of her hazel brown eyes and frowned. “I told Mom cut my bangs, but does she ever listen. Nope.” She let out a sigh. “Well, get over it ‘cause today’s your fifteenth birthday and nothing’s going to ruin the happiest day of your life.”

“Well, sis, I’d pretty much call it ruined if I was late for school,” a voice said.

The girl looked down to see her little eleven-year-old brother. He had medium brown hair and brown eyes. His skin was very tanned that it almost made him look Hispanic. He wore an orange Yu-Gi-Oh shirt, lightly tanned baggy shorts, white socks, and black tennis shoes.

The girl rolled her eyes. “What do you want, Aries?”

Her brother smirked. “Nothing, Nina. Much.”

“Whatever,” the girl said and picked up her heavy backpack. She went to the front door. After saying bye to her mom, she opened the door and went to school. When she caught up to her neighbor, Sharon, and her best friend, Anna, she ran up to meet with them. As soon as she had caught up to the two, she was out of breath. This is what she got for living in a desert. Heat and sweat. “Hey, you guys. Guess what?”

Her two friends looked at her puzzled. The tallest one was Sharon. She was fifteen years old and in the tenth grade. She had super light hair that reached her shoulders and brown eyes. She wore a pink tank top, blue short shorts, and flip-flops.

Her other friend was Anna. She was fourteen years old and, just like Nina, in the ninth grade. She had black hair that reached her shoulders and dark eyes that hid behind her eyes. She also had light brown colored skin. She wore a short sleeved white t-shirt, on top of that was a DBZ tank top, she also wore blue jeans, gray tennis shoes, a red zip up sweater, and a blue dodgers cap. She was what she called “blackanese” because she was part Japanese and also was black.

“What?” Sharon asked finally deciding she and Anna weren’t going to get an answer unless they asked.

“Well,” Nina said, “if you must know I’m turning fifteen today!” She smiled.

“Fifteen, huh,” Anna said trying to sound a bit surprised even though she wasn’t. Nina had been telling her that her birthday was coming and had been bugging about it for the last two weeks. “Well, happy birthday.”

Nina smiled. “This is going to be the best day ever and no one can ruin it at all!” Little did she and her friends know they were being watched closely by a certain half demon.

Inuyasha snorted. He had been watching Nina since April. Kaede had told him to saying Naraku was going after her. He had told the old hag he hadn’t cared. That is until she had said the girl was the reincarnation of Kagome and would most likely have the Shikon no Tama within her body. After that, he went to her world to protect the girl. He went into the year 2003. He had been moping around over Kagome’s death for seven straight years. Even now, he was still trying to get over it, but couldn’t. Which is another reason why he decided to watch over Nina. To get his mind off Kagome, but it hadn’t helped. The girl had a very good resemblance to both, Kagome and Kikyo. She even acted like the two. Sometimes she would be miserable and angry. The next minute she’d be cheerful and gentle. The two scents were even on the girl. It drove him nuts the way she was like the two. Nonetheless, he continued watching over her even though she didn’t know she was being protected or who it was that was protecting her. He had encountered Naraku several times and tried to kill him, but the demon always ran away. Right now, though, Naraku seemed to have quieted down. He hadn’t tried to attack Nina since late April. Inuyasha had gotten really bored because of this. It was now early October and the baboon still hadn’t shown up. Inuyasha sighed. What was the use of watching over the girl if there was nothing to protect her from?

Nina looked out the window and sighed. Fifth period had had to be the most boring class ever. She yawned and rested her head on her desk and fell asleep.

The same boy with white hair and dog-ears looked down at something. It looked like there was something or someone in his arms. He began sobbing.

Nina watched him. Wanting to comfort him, but couldn’t move at all. It seemed like her feet were glued to the ground.

The boy continued sobbing. Nina then heard a girl’s voice.

“I’ll come back to you. I promise.”

Come back? Come back to who? Nina thought.

The dream began fading and she began hearing a different voice.

“Nina,” it said. “Nina. Nina. Nina.”

Nina woke up to hear he name. She looked up with sleepy eyes to see her teacher’s face. She let out a yelp of surprise and almost fell out of her chair. She then calmed down and let out a sigh. “Sorry, Mr. Curi.”

Her teacher eyed her and let out a sigh. “Miss Summers, this is the third time this week.”

“I know,” Nina said. “I really am sorry.”

“Please, go stand in the hall. I’ll talk to you after class,” Mr. Curi said.

Nina nodded and left the classroom. She leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. “That dream. I’ve been having it all week.” She tried to remember it. She saw the boy with white hair and dog-ears. She then opened her eyes. That boy. I know I’ve seen him somewhere before. And why was he crying? Who was he holding?”

The girl’s voice then began echoing in her mind. “I’ll come back to you. I promise.”

“And who will she come back to?” Nina groaned in frustration. “Why do I keep having this stupid dream?!”

Inuyasha heard yelling and looked down from the school building he was on. He saw Nina who kicked a rock. “Stupid girl,” he muttered. He then heard her say something that caught his attention.

“I’ll come back to you. I promise,” Nina said leaning back against the wall. “Honestly, who would… unless the boy, when he was holding the girl, was he… in love with her?”

Inuyasha jumped onto the nearest school building so that he was close enough to hear Nina, but far enough so she wouldn’t see him. How does she know about what happened?

Nina let out a sigh. “I know I’ve seen that boy somewhere. Ugh, I can’t believe this! I never forget anyone I meet. So, how come I can’t remember who he is?!”

A name then came to her mind.

                                 “Inu… yasha?” Nina questioned.

Inuyasha’s ears responded to his name and turned to face the girl. “How does she know my name?”

“That name… why does is sound so familiar?” Nina asked. Just then the bell rang.

“So, what did Mr. Curi want?”  Anna asked eagerly. She and Anna were in the lunchroom.

“Nothing important,” Nina said. “All he wanted to know was if I was alright because I’ve been sleeping in class.”

                                “Oh,” Anna said.

“Anna, did I know anyone named Inuyasha?” Nina asked.

“Inuyasha?” Anna asked. “Well, if you’re talking about the TV show then yeah. If you’re talking about a person then no.”

“TV show? Duh,” Nina said. “How could I forget?” And I actually my dream meant something.

Inuyasha looked down at Nina and grunted. The only reason she knew about him was because of the TV show. But still. How does she know about what Kagome told me before she died?

Nina let out a sigh. “But that still doesn’t explain why I keep having that dream.”

Anna looked at her puzzled. “What dream?”

“Well, I keep having this dream. There’s a boy with white hair, dog ears, golden eyes, and he wears red,” Nina said.

“Oh. You mean Inuyasha,” Anna said.

“Maybe it is. I’m not sure. Anyway, he was crying. I was trying to get to him so I could comfort him, but my legs wouldn’t let me. It was like I was glued to the ground. Then I heard a girl’s voice. She said she would come back to him and promised to do so,” Nina said.

“Maybe it was Inuyasha and the girl was Kagome,” Anna said.

“I suppose you’re right,” Nina said. “The two did seem like they were in love. But how did she die? And how can that be when in the TV show she never died?”

Anna frowned. “It’s a dream. Meaning it never happened.”

“Then why won’t it leave me alone?! I’ve been having that dream this whole week!” Nina said becoming irritated.

                                  Anna shrugged.

Inuyasha watched Nina curiously. “So, that’s what she’s been dreaming about. But why?”

Nina and Anna were walking home after school that day. Nina was still pondering about the dream. Anna was beginning to worry about her friend.

Anna sniffed the air. “Hey! Nina, do you smell that?”

“Huh? Oh. Yeah. It smells like… smoke!” Nina said. Her eyes widened. “And the scent is very strong and close meaning there’s a fire.”

The two girls immediately ran to the scene where a big crowd had gathered. There were big black clouds of smoke coming out of a two-story house. Anna’s eyes widened in fear while Nina’s filled with worry. Nina began biting her lower lip. She walked over to a woman.

“Excuse me, but do you know how this fire started?” Nina calmly asked.

The woman was about to answer when someone screamed. Everyone turned around to see a young woman screaming and crying.

“My son is in there. Someone save him!” The woman began sobbing.

What?! There’s a kid in that burning building! Nina’s eyes widened in fear and she turned to face the woman again. “When did you guys call the fire department?”

“About two minutes ago,” the woman said.

Two minutes ago? That’s no good. They won’t make it in time. Her face changed from fear to determination. “Well, someone’s got to save the kid.” So, I’m going in.

“Oh, no, you don’t,” Anna said running in Nina’s way. “You are not going in there.”

“Yes, I am,” Nina said. “And no one’s stopping me.” She pushed Anna out of the way and ran full speed into the burning building.

Anna watched in a mix of fear and worry. What if her best friend dies in there?

As soon as Nina had entered the building, she covered her nose and mouth. “Now, where could that kid be? Ooohhh, I should’ve asked for the name.” She then heard crying. “It’s from the second floor.”

Meanwhile, Inuyasha was in a tree watching the whole thing. “Stupid girl. She’s gonna get herself killed.” He jumped out of the tree and started heading towards the building.

Nina was now on the second floor. “Kid, where are you?”

                                 “Mommy?” a voice asked.

Nina turned towards the voice to see a boy no older than five. “Sorry, kid. I’m not your mom. I’m Nina. I’ve come to help you.” She went over to the kid. “Are you okay?”

The boy nodded. “Except my ankle hurts really bad. I think I broke it.”

“Huh? Hmm. Which ankle is it?” Nina asked.

“That one,” he said pointing to his right ankle.

Nina pulled down the boy’s sock and looked over the ankle. It was becoming swollen. She then gently felt around the bones to find everything was in place. Her face softened. “Don’t worry. It’s not broken. It’s just sprained.” She looked around to see some of the ceiling falling down into the flames. Her face was full of determination again. “Well, it’s time to leave. Climb onto my back. I’ll give you a piggy back ride.”

The boy nodded and climbed onto her back. Once Nina was sure the boy was ready, she began running towards the stairs.

                                  Anna continued watching the house.

                                 “Hey, look!” a voice cried.

Anna turned towards the direction of the voice it came from to see a man pointing at something. Anna followed it to see a blur of red and white pass and break through the window on the second floor.

“What was that?” a girl asked in awe.

Inuyasha covered his mouth and nose and went in search of Nina. What is that girl thinking about?!

Nina reached the stairs. She was about to go down them, but the ceiling gave way and broke blocking the way. The boy cried out in fear as Nina quickly backed up.

Great. Guess the only way out is the window, Nina thought. She turned towards the direction to the window when the ceiling gave way. Seeing no way to avoid it this time, Nina quickly took the boy off her and turned around to shield him. She closed her eyes in fear as she drew the boy closer to her. I don’t want to die yet.

Inuyasha spotted Nina and the kid. He also spotted the ceiling falling down and knew there was no way they’d be able to move out of the way in time. He quickly ran in front of the two, grabbed them around their waists, and quickly moved out of the way. He then let the two down. “Are you okay?”

Nina opened her eyes and looked towards him. “Yeah, I’m okay.” She then looked towards the boy. “How about you?”

                                      The boy nodded.

Nina smiled and looked towards Inuyasha. “Thank you. If it wasn’t for you, we’d be toast.”

                                      The boy started coughing.

Inuyasha looked towards the boy. “We’re not out of danger yet.”

Nina nodded. She got up and helped the boy up. Inuyasha joined her.

“So, how are we going to get out of here?” Nina asked. She was getting really worried.

“I’ll carry you out of here,” Inuyasha said. “Since my clothes are made of-“

                                       “Great!” Nina said.

“You didn’t let me finish,” Inuyasha said.

“I know, but, oh, who cares. Are you getting us out of here or not?” Nina said.

Inuyasha grunted and went over to the boy. He then picked the boy up with his right arm. The boy put his arms around Inuyasha’s neck. Nina went over to him and put her arms around his neck.

“Before we go, tell me if you’re sure about this,” Nina said.

Inuyasha put his free arm around her waist and held her close to him. “Yeah, I’m sure.”

                                        Nina nodded. “I’m ready.”

Inuyasha took off dodging anything that came in the way. Nina closed her eyes and buried her head in his shirt out of fear. Inuyasha held her even closer. When he reached the window, he jumped out. Nina felt this and tightened her grip around Inuyasha’s neck. The crowd oohed and awed while Anna watched in worry when she spotted Nina. Inuyasha landed in front of the boy’s mother and let the kid go.

The mother hugged her son happily. “Thank you, kind strangers.”

Nina, finally realizing they were on the ground now, let go of Inuyasha. Inuyasha also let her go.

“Thanks,” Nina said. “Um… Inuyasha, right?” She looked up at him.

Inuyasha nodded as he looked down at her. “Right.”

Nina looked away. “So, what are you doing here? In my era, I mean.”

“Nina, I’m so glad you’re okay,” Anna said running to her before Inuyasha could respond.

                                         “So am I,” Nina said.

Anna turned to face the boy who had rescued her friend and let out a gasp. “Nina, tell me I’m dreaming.”

“Sorry, Anna. This is all real,” Nina said. “Wait. It can’t be. What am I saying? It’s got to be a dream. You can’t be real. You’re a cartoon character.”

Inuyasha frowned. “Well, it’s all real. Trust me. Besides, I haven’t ran so fast like that for a long time. I’ll tell you why I’m here and what other questions you have.”

The three began walking to Nina’s house.

“You see, Kaede sent me to watch over you because you’re the reincarnation of Kagome,” Inuyasha said. He winced when he mentioned Kagome’s name.

Nina looked at him sadly. Then she remembered her dream and remembered what they said to each other. This time she remembered it clearly. Inuyasha was holding Kagome in his arms.

“I’ll come back to you. I promise,” Kagome said and died.

Inuyasha held her tighter and whispered in her ear, “And I’ll find you and protect you forever. I promise.”

“I’m sorry, Inuyasha,” Nina said looking down at the ground.

“Don’t be. Neither you nor me could’ve stopped her death,” Inuyasha said looking down at the ground as well.

“Um, anyway you were saying Kaede sent you to watch over Nina,” Anna said trying to change the subject.

“Huh? Oh, yeah. Well, Kaede sent me to watch over her not only because of that, but because Naraku had found out and was going to try and kill her,” Inuyasha said. “Kaede also said the Shikon Jewel may also reside within your body.”

Nina looked at him puzzled then remembered the first episode. “The jewel was in her body because Kikyo had the jewel burned with her dead body. So, then that means…” She stopped suddenly seeing a few people staring down a river. There was a raft floating down the river. The wild fames could be seen. You could also faintly see the body that was being burned. Nina turned her attention to the people. Inuyasha was the nearest to the river. Nina walked over to him. He was obviously trying to hide his emotions over the whole thing, but Nina could see his pain and sorrow in his eyes. She then looked towards Sango and Miroku. Sango was in his arms and crying. Miroku was stroking her hair and trying to stop her from crying, but you could tell he was just about ready to cry as well. Nina looked down at Shippo who was crying the loudest. Nina felt her heart ache with pain. It pained her to see the young fox demon cry. She shook her head and turned her attention to Kaede. The old priestess watch the scene sadly as a tear went down her cheek. Suddenly, the scene disappeared and Nina was back in reality. “Sorry about that. Um, Kagome had burned the Shikon no Tama with her so, technically, the jewel should be within me.”

Inuyasha looked at her confused. How did she know that?

“So, how did you get to this era?” Anna asked.

“Some of Kaede’s magic,” Inuyasha replied.

“When did you come?” Nina asked.

“Sometime in April of this year,” Inuyasha said.

That explains why I felt like I was being watched all the time. I thought I had gotten paranoid, Nina thought. Well, I’m glad that I was right, though it hadn’t creeped me out at all. It actually made me feel safe.

Inuyasha sniffed the air and realized something. Nina didn’t just have Kikyo and Kagome’s scent, but also a slight scent of demon within her. He turned to face then girl. Had she been reincarnated with Kagome’s demon side as well?

Anna and Nina were now talking about school and how much they both hated math. Nina tucked some of her hair behind her left ear to reveal slightly elfish-like ears.

Inuyasha’s eyes widened. Nina had been reincarnated with Kagome’s demon side, too. Nina maybe the most powerful priestess yet. She had Kikyo and Kagome’s powers, was a priestess, and a half demon and she was unaware of it at all. Kagome only turned full demon every full moon. The rest of the time she was human. Nina always seemed to look the way she did no matter what part of the cycle the moon was in. This probably answered why her eyes sometimes appeared a dark green while others thought they were gold. Nina claimed they were brown and that was that. Her cousins decided they were hazel. So, Nina made up her mind and said they were hazel brown. “Nina, did you know you were half-demon?”

Nina looked towards him surprised while Anna looked at him shocked.

“Wh-what do you mean?” Nina asked.

“Your ears, your eyes, and scent all say demon. You’re half demon,” Inuyasha said.

Nina looked at him in anger. She had enough of people teasing her because her ears were slightly pointed. All seventh grade, she had to deal with her friend’s cousin calling her elf, fairy, dwarf, basically anything that had pointy ears. After he had gone off to the high school, her ears remained unteased. At least until April when Inuyasha had come. During p.e. Anna, Andy, and her were talking. Nina put her hair behind her ears and Andy said she had Link (from The Legend of Zelda) ears. Anna even said she had elfin ears. Now Inuyasha was calling her a half demon because of her ears. “I am not half demon. In order to be that, my mom or dad has to be a demon and trust me, they’re not. So, there. I’m human.”

“Hey, I know what I smell and it’s demon,” Inuyasha said. “You have a slight scent of dog demon.”

                                         “What?! But-but I’m not. I can’t be,” Nina said.

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. “Listen, girl, you are. Rather you like it or not, you’re half demon.”

“Oh, yeah. Prove it,” Nina said. “And don’t say my scent, ears, and eyes are proof enough.”

“Your nails,” Inuyasha said. “They grow back really fast after you’ve cut them, don’t they?”

Nina looked down at her nails. “Okay. So they do grow abnormally fast, that still doesn’t prove anything. Besides, shouldn’t I have dog ears, white hair, and golden eyes?”

Inuyasha thought about this. Nina was right about not having dog-ears or white hair, but her eyes appeared gold sometimes. “Well, um, oh, who cares. Your scent says dog demon and that is that.”

Nina glared at him. “No, it’s not. Besides, if I’m half dog demon, how come I don’t heal fast?”

“Actually, you do,” Inuyasha said. “Not as fast as me, though.”

“I do not heal fast,” Nina said. “I still have my scabs.”

“Yeah, but they go away after a couple of days,” Inuyasha said. “You definitely heal faster than any ordinary human.”

“Look, I am a normal teenage human girl,” Nina said. “I have no demon blood whatsoever.”

                                         “Yes, you do,” Inuyasha said.

                                          “I am not a… not a… not a…”

“Not a what? Not a freak? Hmm? Well, I got news for you, you are,” Inuyasha said not bothering to let Nina finish. With that, he began leaving.

                                         “What a jerk,” Anna said.

Nina let out a sigh. “Anna, go home. I’ll call you later, ‘kay.” She smiled.

                                         Anna frowned. “Okay.”

Nina ran after Inuyasha calling out his name.

Inuyasha tried ignoring her, but that didn’t last. He turned around to face her. “What do ya want?!”

Nina looked up at him seeing his eyes glare at her. She winced at the harshness in his voice. “Look, Inuyasha, I’m… sorry.” She looked away and looked down at the road. “On all the episodes that showed you being treated by villagers during your childhood, I had always wished I was there to stop them from hurting you. I-I never meant to call you a freak because you’re not. You’re actually pretty cool.” She looked up at him and smiled. “So, do you forgive me?”

Inuyasha’s eyes softened. “Yeah, I forgive ya.” Why am I being so nice to her? Grr, Kagome’s made me too way too soft.

Nina looked at him a bit confused. “You know, maybe this is a dream.” She looked back down at the ground.

                                          Inuyasha looked at her puzzled.

“But I don’t want it to be a dream,” Nina said shaking her head. She looked up at Inuyasha. “All my life I have always wished to have an adventure with people like you. We’d fight evil and save the world. And now you come and I know you’re here to take me to Feudal Japan. It’s just, it’s too good to be true.” She immediately hugged Inuyasha and began crying.

Inuyasha looked down at her. He hated it whenever a girl cried. Especially when it was Kagome. But he didn’t like Nina crying either. He embraced the girl. “Calm down, Nina. This is all real. I can promise you that.”

Nina stopped crying and looked up at Inuyasha. Inuyasha wiped her tears away.

“Now be a good girl and stop crying,” Inuyasha said.

“Okay,” Nina said and let go of him. He did the same. “So, do you want to come over? My brother thinks you’re cool. He doesn’t think you’re a freak or anything. And Mom and Dad, well, don’t worry about them. So, do you?”

Inuyasha thought about this and shrugged. “Okay.”
