Chaos Lives

Chapter 2: Smooth Sailing, for now

Well, things were going fairly well at the moment. Kevin sat in the living room of the Toros base, two memos sitting on the table in front of him. One from the construction team, the other from the design team. The head of the construction team reported that the zoids were breaking down less, now that the structure was now 80% complete. It’d be ready for inspection at the end of the month. The news from the head of the design team interested Kevin more though. They had finished installing his part on his Spiner, and it was ready for combat testing. And off Kevin was.

Bit was walking down the hallway, box of doughnuts cradled under one arm, his free hand holding onto the doughnut half shoved into his mouth. Minding his own business, he didn’t see Kevin round the corner at the end of the hall, and thusly, didn’t move to get out of the way. Nearly getting run over by Kevin, who was sprinting by. Well, Bit couldn’t help but wonder where Kevin was off to, so he finished off the doughnut in his mouth and took off after Kevin. He wasn’t ready for what he found in the hanger though. Kevin’s Spiner stood in the center of the hanger, it’s armor and weapons gleaming. Four vulcans and six missiles pods had been added to it. What else, Bit knew not. Bit’s jaw dropped as he looked for something to say. Kevin glanced over his should and looked at Bit.

“It still needs combat testing, you up for it?” Kevin asked, a smirk appearing on his face.

“Er, I, uh....” Bit stammered. “Yes! I’ll fight your Spiner. Don’t care what weapons it has, it still can’t beat Liger.” Bit said, looking more than a bit cocky.

“We shall see.” Kevin said as he climbed up to the Spiner’s cockpit.

The Liger Zero and Dark Spiner stood facing one another, the desert winds whipping up small sandstorms around the area. The zoids each let out a growl.

“Ready?” The Spiner shifted it’s weight, it’s left foot digging into the sand.

“Ready.” The Liger crouched low, ready to pounce.

The Liger Zero took off as the Spiner opened fire, it’s vulcans, 144mm’s, and pulse cannons roaring. Bit worked his hardest to avoid the insane amounts of fire flying at him, dodging a decent amount. The Zero skidded, lunging at the Spiner, the impact cannons firing at the Spiner’s legs, while the Zero’s claws began to glow. Kevin grinned as the Spiner stopped firing and dropped it’s footlocks. The spines raised and the air around the Spiner turned bluish. The Liger hit the Spiner’s ion field head on, getting thrown back. The Liger pushed itself to it’s feet, small bolts of electricity snaking over the zoid.

“The Liger can’t do everything.” Kevin said as his grin turned feral, the shoulder mounted missile pods opening up. Bit’s face went pale as 10 missiles lanced forth from each pod, and then as all the missiles promptly split into smaller missiles. Bit threw the Liger away from the 100 micro missiles flying at him. The missiles rained down around the Liger as Bit juked about, trying to avoid the bulk of the missiles.

“Geeze! This is worse than having Leena open fire on me!” Bit murmured through gritted teeth.

The Spiner’s missile pods closed as it rose off the ground and boosted off after the Liger, guns blazing. Bit ran as hard as he could, then it hit him. He was faster than Kevin. Bit grinned as he spun the Liger to face the Spiner and used the Liger’s SLC on the Spiner. The vulcan that was on the Spiner’s right leg hit the ground with a thud. Kevin didn’t even flinch, as he spun the Spiner, firing all it’s remaining missiles, as well as it’s guns. The Liger Zero disappeared in a cloud of smoke and sand as the attack connected. The Spiner’s guns smoked silently as they ceased fire for the moment, giving the Zero time to recover. The Spiner trudged towards the cloud of smoke. The battered Liger Zero exploded from the smoke cloud moments later, claws glowing as it aimed for the Spiner’s back. Kevin tried to duck his zoid out of the way, but the Liger connected, forcing the Spiner to the ground. The Spiner threw the Liger off of it, and a deadly surprise awaited the Liger. A pair of beam saws had appeared, one on each of the Spiner’s arms. Bit’s eyes widened as the Spiner lunged, the saws coming dangerously close to one of the Liger’s legs, as the Liger ducked under the swipe. Bit fired his impact cannon at the Spiner’s chest, barely phasing the zoid.

“Armor’s thicker there, cause of the vulcans are mounted on the chest.” Kevin said matter of factly, folding the saws and latching onto the Liger. The Spiner tossed the zoid aside as it turned to face it. Kevin pulled the trigger to fire the vulcans, but they just spun aimlessly, out of ammo.

“Crap.” Kevin said as he began firing his other weapons at the Liger.

The following events seemed to happen in slow motion. The Liger ducked under the Spiner’s fire as it charged, claws glowing. The Spiner extended it’s saws and brought them up to the Liger’s neck. The Spiner’s claws hovered dangerously close to the Spiner’s neck.

“Draw?” Bit asked.

“Draw.”

Kevin folded the Spiner’s saws back up and walked over to the vulcan that lie on the ground, ominously. It picked it up as the Liger trotted back to the base. Kevin scratched his goatee, lost in thought as the Spiner walked back to the base.

“I don’t remember him being this good. Maybe it was the Liger....but...it couldn’t have picked up my units abilities that fast...” Kevin pondered this all the way back to the base, where he was greeted by his over-enthusiastic father in law. Yup, Kevin was in for a long afternoon.

Jamie walked through the nearly completed training center. It was gonna be a lot easier to train pilots here, then from the base. He couldn’t help but notice how...new...everything felt. In fact, he was amazed that Kevin had let him get all the newest equipment for the place. But then, it was an added bonus to being rich. Jamie found himself in one of the center’s many hangers. It happened to be one of the hangers for aerial zoids. He saw Pierce sitting at the edge of the hanger, dangling her legs over the side. He blinked a few times, then walked over to her, standing next to her.

“Nice, isn’t it?” Jamie asked, indicating the open sky in front of them.

“It is. The sky makes you feel so...free.” Pierce said with a grin.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Jamie said, grinning as well, sitting down next to Pierce.

In the cavern...

Humans...such worthless life forms. They’ll soon know their place on this planet... The beasts red eyes flashed.
