Rurouni Kenshin is an absolutely brilliant anime that mixes light-hearted humor with the seriousness of actual Japanese history. The original anime aired in Japan from January/1996 to September/1998. It eventually found it's way to Cartoon Network(Toonami) in 2003.
The storyline centers around a small but exceptionally skillful samurai who, during a time of political unrest, was known as the legendary "Battousai the Manslayer." This virtual killing machine was said to be undefeatable.
Then one day the Battousai simply disappeared. There are many rumors explaining his disappearance. Some say he knew too much and may be targeted by assassins, while others say he had slain someone he shouldn't have.
Whatever the reason, the once "Battousai the Manslayer" has become a wanderer and vowed to never kill again!
