SYNOPSIS Now and Then, Here and There is a 12 episode masterpiece directed by Akitaroh Daichi. The series aired in Japan from October, 1999 thru January, 2000. It is an emotional series that will touch you in ways you never thought possible. A happy, spirited teen (Shu) is swept into an alternate universe by no choice of his own. While he endures the hardships of war, greed, and oppression, he never gives up his quest to save the mysterious, pretty girl he had recently befriended. Shu, remains optimistic even after being brutally tortured over and over again. When Shu is forced to join Hamdo's army, he refuses to be a part of their hostility. Many of Hamdo's army consisted of children who were kidnapped from their villages. These children were robbed of their innocence and brainwashed into believing what they were doing was right. (Sound like fiction? Sadly, many of these horrific events take place in our world today.) Never wavering from his convictions, a heroic Shu does whatever it takes to free LaLaRu from captivity. While viewing each episode, you will experience various emotions...pity...shock...sadness...and genuine hatred. What would you do if you were told the only way you could see your family again, was if you killed innocent men, women, and children? Could you look into the wide eyes of a child and pull the trigger? Do you fear for your life so greatly that you would perform the incomprehensible even though you know it's wrong? Difficult questions, aren't they? However, those are the questions that make this series so impressive. The character designs are, at best, simplistic. However, the plot is one you'll not soon forget. "Now and Then, Here and There" is a tragedy, a triumph, and an absolute must see. From LaLaRu's ultimate sacrifice that represents a cleansing ... to the final smile on a soldier's face as he is swept away after rescuing a child. A smile that seemed to echo, "I've finally done something right in my life." Events such as these will leave the viewer in tears. An anime with such emotional impact is one you won't want to miss.
