The episode opens with an explanation of the destruction that was caused by the nine tails fox. It, also, tells the tale of the Fourth Hokage, who was able to seal the fox away but lost his life in the process. We then see the infant Naruto with a large seal on his tummy.

Great intro song leads the way to present day (12 years later) where we see the mischievous Naruto getting into trouble. Finally caught by Iruka, the boy is told he must clean the mountain images that he vandalized. All is not bad...for Iruka takes him to get ramen at Ramen Ichiraku when the task is completed.

In class, the genin will graduate if they pass one last test. Disappointment sets in when Naruto cannot pass because he cannot master the replication technique. Mizuki talks to the blond boy saying he will tell a secret. Naruto is tricked into taking the Scroll of Sealing. In the forest that evening, the young Uzumaki studies the scroll while unbeknownst to him, the ninja's have gathered to find him. (This is how he is able to learn the multiple shadow cloning technique.) Seems the scroll harbors forbidden techniques and no one is supposed to have it!

Later, Iruka finds Naruto and learns how it was Mizuki who told him to take the scroll. The plan was to spread the word that Naruto did this and then kill the boy and take the scroll of sealing for himself. When Mizuki tries to put his plan into action and kill Naruto, Iruka blocks a deadly attack by taking the hit himself. Afterwards, nasty Mizuki tells Naruto why it is that he has been hated and isolated in the village. While Iruka begs the man to stop, Naruto runs off tearfully into the forest.

In Konoha, the Hokage is watching the events taking place using a crystal ball. He worries of Naruto's instability. Meanwhile, Mizuki chases who he believes is Naruto, but it was actually Iruka taking on the boy's form. Iruka knows that Naruto grew up just like him....isolated and alone after his parents died. When Naruto hears that Iruka is actually sticking up for him, he comes out from hiding to protect his sensei. Using the shadow cloning he just learned from the scroll, Naruto overpowers the evil man. A hurt and exhausted Iruka tells the boy to come to him. Naruto is elated when he finds that Iruka gave him the coveted headband and informed him that he had passed.

In the village, the Hokage informs all the other ninjas that everything is fine.
