*Chapter Two* The Explanations and the Four Sisters

 

“I can see you’ve met before”, Nyumi said. “Hai, Nyumi-sama, but under very different circumstances”, Sakura said, “I was out searching when I, or should I say they, found me.” “Interesting”, Nyumi said, “The same reason, I presume?” Sakura nodded, oblivious to the angry form of Inuyasha that was positioned to attack. “Maybe you should learn why I lured you here before trying to take off my head”, Sakura said to Inuyasha, “And I had no intention of keeping this sword. It was all bait.” She tossed the Tetsusaiga, wrapped in cloth, to Inuyasha who caught it.

 

“What is this all about”, Kagome asked. “It’s a long story, but you probably don’t need to hear it”, Nyumi said, “We need your help liberating our village from a group of youkai.” “You couldn’t do it”, Inuyasha questioned. “Iie”, Sakura said, “The leader of the youkai possesses too many shards for just one person to overcome.” “Do you know who it is”, Kagome asked. “It’s a group of four youkai”, Nyumi said, “They each control an element: fire, water, wind, and earth.” “I would be able to kick their ass if my powers weren’t frozen”, Sakura muttered. “Just for useless information”, Inuyasha said, “What are you?” “So you noticed”, Sakura said with a smile, “I imagined you would, but I thought you would have caught on sooner. I’m a quarter youkai. My mother, a human, had powerful miko powers and my father, a hanyou also, is where I get my youkai powers.” “Was your father a kitsune”, Shippo asked. “Clever thinking”, Sakura said, “But no.” “Since no harm was done to you and I’m sure that anything that Sakura has done to you she feels greatly sorry for”, Nyumi said, “Are you willing to help her save this village?” “I don’t see the harm in it”, Kagome said. The others agreed.

 

“Is there anything that you want answered”, Sakura said. “How did you get kitsune powers”, Sango asked. “I’m afraid I can’t answer that one quite yet”, Sakura said, “That is something most do not know of.” “How did your powers get frozen”, Miroku asked. “It’s not an ordinary thing that happens”, Sakura said, “It’s due to a youkai that I fought about ten years ago. It was a witch youkai and she placed a spell on me. That spell froze most of my powers, leaving me with only enough to survive on. The spell has loosened and I’m slowly regaining my powers. It is also to blame for my human appearance.” “Why are you after the shards”, Inuyasha asked.

 

“Finding a youkai”, Sakura said, “I knew I could find him if I go looking for the shards, so I started one day. I found him after three years, but I haven’t seen him since. I heard rumors, but they were all misleading.” “You should get your rest for tonight”, Nyumi said, “Your interrogation of Sakura can wait until morning. She will show you to your rooms.” Sakura nodded and they left Nyumi.

 

“Okay”, Sakura said stopping at two doors. She slid the first one open. “The girls can sleep in this one”, she said, “And the guys in this one.” She opened the other door. “They were Nyumi-sama’s orders”, she added, “If you need anything, just go to the door with the big dragon symbol on it.” They thanked her and went into their rooms.

 

“What do you think of her”, Kagome asked as she and Sango tried to fall asleep. Shippo had snuck in after Sakura left and was now asleep next to Kagome. “She doesn’t seem to have an evil intention”, Sango said, “And she gave the Tetsusaiga back to Inuyasha after explaining her reason behind taking it. She definitely couldn’t be working for Sesshoumaru or Naraku.” “They would have told her to bring the Tetsusaiga to them if she was”, Kagome said, “But I couldn’t sense the shards that she had earlier anywhere.” “Do you think she gave them away”, Sango asked. “I don’t know”, Kagome said, “I’ll just ask her about it in the morning.”

 

Inuyasha and Miroku were having a similar conversation in the next room. “She can’t be that bad”, Miroku said, “She gave you back the sword which proves she isn’t working for your brother or Naraku.” “She still took it”, Inuyasha said, “What if this is all a trap? We’ll be walking head first into it without thinking twice about it.” “How thick headed can you be”, Miroku asked, “Though there is one thing disturbing about her.” “What”, Inuyasha asked flatly. “Her remarkable similarity to the princess”, Miroku said, “She could be her double.” “By the sound of it, they aren’t related”, Inuyasha said, “Just ask her about it in the morning if it’s still bothering you.” “I had already planned on it”, Miroku said.

 

Morning came quickly and they woke to their new surroundings. They were left a note telling them where to go for breakfast, so they followed the instructions. “Ohayou”, Sakura said as they walked in, “I trust that you slept well.” “Hai”, Kagome said, “Where is Nyumi-sama?” “She left for her lessons”, Sakura said, “She said that you were to eat and then she should be back. If not, you could finish questioning me.”

 

As they ate, Sakura was asked a number of questions. Most of which she answered, but there were a few that she either couldn’t answer or refused to. “So”, Sango said, “You said that you were collecting the shards.” Sakura nodded. “Where do you keep them while you’re not out collecting?” “They’re always with me”, Sakura said, “I change pouches because one keeps them from detection. That is why Kagome was not able to sense them while we talked.” “You knew”, Kagome asked. “Of course”, Sakura said, “If you have one shard you want more. You were trying to find out where I had the other ones. I could tell by the way you kept looking around that you were trying to find something.” “Are you and the princess related in any way”, Miroku asked, “I couldn’t help but notice that you look almost exactly like her.” “Nope”, Sakura said, “We met when we were kids. I saved her life when she was attacked one day and she saved mine when she found that I had enough wounds that I could drop dead any minute. She knew that I wasn’t human despite the spell. Her mother took pity on me and basically raised me.” “What about your parents”, Miroku asked, “Did they know about this?” Sakura took a long look out the window before answering. “My mother was killed when I was young and I haven’t seen my father for almost sixteen years”, she said as she watched the birds fly in the sky, “They never knew about this until recently.” They remained silent for a moment. “Enough of this sad talk”, Sakura said, “On to happier topics!”

 

Nyumi came back shortly after they finished. “There’s been another attack”, Nyumi said. “Where”, Sakura asked. “In the northern part of the village”, Nyumi said, “They’ve taken a hostage and left a note.” Sakura took the note and read it out loud.

 

As you probably already know, we have taken the girl and we refuse to give her back. Only if you bring the Shikon shards and the princess to the deserted battlefield in the north, will we give the girl back. If you do not bring the items we request, the girl will die. You have two days.

 

“Damn it”, Sakura said. “What do we do”, Nyumi asked. “They’ll know whether or not you brought the shards, so I’d say you’re out of luck”, Inuyasha said. “You could show so consideration”, Kagome said. “There might be a way to keep you out of trouble”, Sango said. “Honto? How?” Nyumi asked. “Well you and Sakura look almost exactly alike, so the two of you could switch places”, Sango said, “When you bring them the shards, Sakura will be in your spot. We can hide somewhere and once the trade is made and the girl is safe, we can attack them.” “That’s a brilliant plan”, Nyumi said, “But what about the shards? If they get any more, then no one will be able to defeat them.”

 

“I think I can solve that”, Sakura said bring out two pouches. “But I’ll need Kagome’s help just for this part.” “Okay, what do I have to do”, Kagome asked. “Just tell which bag has the real shards in them”, Sakura said, “Each bag has four shards.” “It looks like they both have the shards in them”, Kagome said. “Just what I wanted to hear”, Sakura said, “What about now?” “The right pouch”, Kagome said. “Bingo”, Sakura said. “What’s this got to do with anything”, Nyumi asked. “I used regular crystal shards and infused them with magic”, Sakura said, “The left pouch contained the crystal shards and the right pouch had the Shikon shards. We can use Sango’s plan but without the possibility of losing the shards.” “I just hope all of this goes according to plan”, Miroku said.

 

Sakura was beginning to become agitated as she waited for the four youkai to come. The others were waiting near by if things got out of hand. Nyumi was in Sakura’s clothing next to her waiting as well. They were both nervous, but neither let it show. “So you decided to show up.” Sakura and Nyumi turned and found one of the youkai hovering in the air with an amused look on her face. She was dressed in completely white and had light silver hair and deep blue eyes. “Bring the girl”, Nyumi said. (A/N: Sakura is Nyumi and Nyumi is Sakura. That’s how they look to others.) “Not very patient are we”, the girl said, “Well, human, you had better learn your place if you want the girl to live.” “Stop teasing them, Windy.” They saw three other youkai coming with one human girl. They stopped a few feet in front of Nyumi and Sakura.

 

“You have what we said to bring”, the one in red asked. Nyumi pulled out the shards. “Go”, the one in blue said, “Give them to the princess and back away.” Nyumi gave the shards to Sakura and slowly walked back. “You and the girl will both walk toward each other until you pass”, the one in green said, “Then the girl will walk over to her and you will walk over to us.” They pushed the girl forward and she began to shakily walk. Sakura walked slowly forward also.

 

“Something isn’t right about this”, the one in green said. “What are you talking about”, the one in red asked. Sakura and the girl had no walked past each other and they were only a few feet from their destinations. “Earthy is right”, the one in blue said, “Something smells fishy.” “There’s nothing wrong”, Windy said, “You’re just worried you won’t get those shards.” “Like hell I am”, the blue one said, “I’ll have a better chance than you at getting them.” “Watery! Windy! Stop this at once”, the red one said, “It is not getting us anywhere.” “Ever since you and Earthy got those shards, you’ve been acting weird”, Watery said, “Hiding something, Fiery?” “No”, Fiery said, “You know I’m short on temper.” “I forgot”, Watery joked.

 

Sakura was now in front of the four sisters and the girl was with Nyumi. “Good now give us the shards”, Fiery said. Sakura gave them the pouch quickly. “I thought so”, Earthy said grabbing Sakura’s out stretched hand, “She’s a fake. That brat princess doesn’t have claws for nails.” “So you caught me”, Sakura said sending a blast of power through her hand. Earthy dropped it quickly as she felt the burn. “You’re that wench that is always with Nyumi”, Watery said. “Good job”, Sakura said, “You want your prize?” “It’s too late now”, Fiery said, “We’ve got the shards and you’re too weak to even put up a good defense.” Sakura jumped back a few feet. “Think again”, she said. Fiery pulled out the shards in fury. “They’re fakes”, she said angrily as she crushed them in her fist.

 

“It seems like the little ole youkai’s mad”, Sakura said. “I’ll kill you for this”, Fiery said. “Hiraikotsu!” The fire youkai was knocked off of its course when the huge boomerang came into its path. “Just in time”, Sakura said. “So it was a set up”, Earthy said, “In that case we’ll just have to kill them all.”
