The first version of the GM was based on the RX-796. It shares both the same alloy armor and 80% of its parts as the RX-796 Gundam, making this early version of the GM superior to the later models.

42 units of the ground type GM were produced, and 12 were assigned to the Kojima Battalion in Southeast Asia.
