Mobile Suit Gundam Characters

Amuro Ray

English Voice Actor: Brad Swaile
Age: 15

Amuro is the initial and arguably the most famous “Newtype” of the Gundam Franchise. In many episodes, he has perfected that teenage angst persona. As with many of the Gundam heroes, he was initially an unwilling Gundam pilot. However, when his skills were needed, Amuro would do whatever it took to protect the ones he cared about. Amuro was brought aboard the Whitebase when his Colony (Side 7) came under attack by Char. In an effort to help, Amuro pilots his father’s prototype Gundam using nothing more than an instruction manual. Prior to that occurrence, he was pretty much a techno geek. After his parents divorce, Amuro withdrew from others and spent hours tinkering with gadgets.

Bright Noah

English Voice Actor: Chris Kalhoon
Age: 19

In the One Year War, Bright Noa was just an Officer candidate when he was forced to take the position of Commanding Officer aboard the White Base. All of his comrades ranking above him were either injured or dead after Char Aznable’s attack on the colony, Side 7. Although he proves to be a very good leader, Bright often relied on his 2nd in command, Mirai Yashima, whom he eventually marries. One would definitely consider Bright a forthright and dedicated Officer for the Earth Federation (at least in this particular series).

Mirai Yashima

English Voice Actor: Cathy Weseluck
Age: 18

After the attack on Side 7, Mirai joins the other civilians on the White Base. As a trained space glider pilot, she offers her services to Bright Noa, who immediately makes her his 2nd in command at the helm. Although not always confident in her decisions, Mirai proves herself very capable. When the One Year War ends, Mirai marries Bright and the two of them start a family.

Sayla Mass

English Voice Actor: Alaina Burnett
Age: 17

Sayla was born Artesia Som Deikun and is the sister of Char (see Char’s summary for more details). She was a civilian on Side 7 when it was attacked and ended up on the mobile suit carrier, White Base. Once on the White base, Sayla is recruited to act as Bright Noa’s communications officer. Later, her abilities are recognized, and she becomes Amuro’s G-Fighter co-pilot. Sayla has a brief encounter with Char on Side 7 just before coming aboard the White Base. She suspects but is unsure if the man was her brother and continuously makes attempts to search for him.

Fraw Bow

English Voice Actor: Kristie Marsden
Age: 15

Frau is Amuro’s childhood friend and classmate on the Colony, Side 7. Although young, Frau is very nurturing. When Amuro’s parents were divorced, it was Frau who made sure he properly took care of himself (eat, sleep, bathe). When their Colony was attacked, Frau raced to Amuro’s home to make sure he followed evacuation procedures. It was this concern for Amuro that probably saved her life, otherwise she would have been killed in the explosion that wiped out her remaining family (mother, grandfather). After the events on Side 7, Frau, along with Amuro and many others end up on the Earth Federation Space Forces (EFSF) ship, White Base. She is often seen caring for the young refugee children aboard the ship.

Char Aznable a.k.a. Casval Rem Deikun

English Voice Actor: Michael Kopsa
Age: 20

Best known as Char Aznable, this handsome man has so many alias’ it’s hard to keep track of them all. He was born Casval Rem Deikun, son of Zeon Zurn Deikun and brother of Artesia Som Deikun (Sayla). When their father was killed as a result of the Zabi family’s betrayal, Casval and Artesia escape to Earth. While there, they lived under the guardianship of the rich Don Teabolo Mass. The man renamed the children Edward and Sayla Mass and raised them as his own. After another attempt on their lives by the treacherous Zabi family, they flee to the Texas Colony and live for a time with Roger Aznable. As it so happens, Roger has a son, Char, who looked identical to Casval except for eye color. In a bazaar twist of fate, Char is killed when the ship he is on explodes. (The saboteurs believed it was Edward Mass aboard that ship.) After the tragic incident, Casval assumes the identity of Char Aznable making sure to hide his eye color with sunglasses.

Char enters the Zeon Military Academy and excels. During that time hostility erupted between Zeon and the Federation. During the Battle of Loum, Char performed so admirably that he was named the “Red Comet” and promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Char's newtype capabilities become apparent as the series progresses. (Have you got all that straight? There will be more in the Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta character descriptions.)

Garma Zabi

English Voice Actor: Brian Dobson
Age: 20

Garma is the youngest child of Degwin Sodo Zabi, the absolute dictator of the Principality of Zeon. In addition, he is the commander of the Zeon Earth Attack Force. It's hard to believe that this handsome, naive man came from the same family as his not so attractive but extremely intelligent siblings. Garma doesn't last very long in the series. He is killed pursuing the White Base in an effort to prove himself. Unfortunately, he never gets the chance due to Char's betrayal. Garma was loved by the Zeon people and thus, given a very elaborate funeral.
