The Digidestined arrive in the Digital World and find the world is darker. The Earth hangs in the sky the way the Digital World appears in Earth's sky. Joe is surprised when a creature pops out of the bushes, and the Digimon digivolve to their rookie form to fight it. Kari calls for them to stop and coaxes the frightened Digimon out of the bushes--it's Chumon, only Sukamon isn't with him.
Meanwhile, Matt, Joe, and Tai notice the land is shifting and moving. Izzy tries to contact Gennai.
Chumon tells how he lost Sukamon the day the Dark Masters appeared. The Dark Masters reorganized the Digital World and created Spiral Mountain. Chumon warns that the Masters are merciless towards anyone who stands in their way, but Mimi reassures them that as long as the eight chosen children are together nothing can stand in their way.
Of course, this is when MetalSeadramon, the first Dark Masters, decides to attack. But even eight champion-level Digimon can't take on a mega, and the Digidestined are severely beaten. Machinedramon, the next Dark Master, appears out of the mist and takes on all the ultimate forms of the Digimon without any damage. Puppetmon makes string puppets out of the Digidestined and their Digimon before sending them to a giant coliseum. A clown appears and tells them a story: "Once upon a time there were eight dig destined. They went with their Digimon companions to try to save the world. The children and their Digimon discovered that, in order for them to do it, they had to climb to the top of spiral mountain. But, to their dismay, the Dark Masters defeated them. So sad!" The clown turns into Piedmon. Agumon and Gabumon warp digivolve, but are helpless against Piedmon.
The four Dark Masters gather together. When Piedmon asks who wants to be the first to die, Mimi breaks down, saying she wishes she could be a normal kid and not a Digidestined. Piedmon goes to destroy her, but Chumon jumps in the way of the attack and is deleted. As Piedmon goes to attack again, Pixiemon appears and rescues the kids. He tells them that just being together as the Digidestined isn't enough to save the Digital World, they'll need something else to defeat the Dark Masters--but they must discover what that is on their own.
Pixiemon sends the kids away. He goes to hold off the Dark Masters while the Digidestined head for the top of Spiral Mountain.
