Chapter 2:

Assembling the Team

Renamon sat quietly in her apartment as she listened to some soothing music.  Ever since the hearing her new line of wok had been degrading to say the least and her psychiatric trips were anything but pleasant.  Suddenly her reprieve was broken by a knock at her door.  Rena got up and walked over toward the door and opened it a crack, beyond she saw Ken and an unfamiliar figure with him.

“Hello Rena,” Ken said then pointed toward his friend and said,” This is Lieutenant Kido Joe of the Colonial Marines…”

Before he could finish his sentence Rena slammed the door shut.

“Rena,” Ken said as he knocked on the door,” we need to talk.  We’ve lost contact with the colony on LV-426.”

At first there was silence, leaving the two stunned men looking at each other, then slowly the door opened.

“Okay come on in,” Rena said quietly

***

“I don’t believe this,” Rena snorted as she poured some coffee for Ken and Lieutenant Kido, “You guys threw me to the f**king wolves and now you want me to go back out there. Forget it!  It’s not my problem.”

            “Rena…” Ken started.

            “No,” she said again.

            “Can I finish,” Ken asked.

“No,” Rena said as she handed both of them a cup.

“Renamon,” Joe started, “You won’t be going in with the troops. I can guarantee your safety.”

Rena scoffed as she walked back to the kitchen to get herself something to drink.

“These colonial marines a tough group Rena,” Ken added, “They have state of the art firepower. There is nothing they can’t handle… Am I right Lieutenant?”

“That is correct,” Joe nodded,” We’ve been trained to handle situations like this.”

“Well then you guys don’t need me,” Rena said as she looked between the two humans. “I’m not a soldier.”

“The thing is… we don’t know exactly what is going on out there,” Ken said as he put his coffee down, “it could be just a downed transmitter, but if it’s not then I would like you there as an advisor.  That’s all.”

“Why are you going,” Rena asked suddenly realizing the -we- part of the story.

“The Corporation finances that colony,” Ken said, “we’re getting into a lot of terra-forming on a lot of planets; you know building better worlds…”

“Yeah, Yeah, I saw you’re commercial,” Rena let out an annoyed sigh, “Look I don’t have time for this.  I’ve got to get to work soon.”

“Oh right,” Ken nodded, but his voice had condescending ring to it. “I heard you were working in the cargo docks.”

“Yeah that’s right,” Rena said flatly.

            “Running loaders and forklifts and…”

“Yeah so,” Rena gave Ken a sharp look.

“No, no,” Ken said as he put up his hands, “I think it’s great that you are keeping busy, and I know that it was the only thing you could get.  There is nothing wrong with that, but what if I told you I could get you reinstated as a flight officer.”

Rena looked at him with disbelief.

“The company has already agreed to pick up your contract,” Ken urged.

            “If I go,” Rena asked.

“Yeah,” Ken nodded, “Personally I think it would be the best thing for you to go out and face your fears. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“Spare me,” Rena rolled her eyes, “I’ve already had my psych evaluation for this month.”

“Yeah I know,” Ken said, “I’ve read the reports.  You wake up every night and your sheets are soaking wet…”

“I said no,” Rena said angrily, “and I mean it!”

            “Okay,” Ken said.

“Now please leave,” she said taking his coffee cup, “I am not going back out there and…and I wouldn’t be any good to you even if I did.”

“Okay,” Ken sighed as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a plastic card, “If you change your mind please call me.”

He placed the card on the able and got up to leave.

“Thanks for the coffee,” Joe said as he followed Ken out.

Once the two let Rena covered her mouth ad began to sob quietly.

***

“No,” Rena screamed as she sat up in her bed trying to catch her breath covered in sweat.

Slowly she got out of bed and walked toward the faucet and turned to knob. Clasping her hands together, she gently splashed some water over her face.  She then looked in the mirror and knew what needed to be done.

She took Ken’s card and inserted into a machine and pressed a switch.  A blue light appeared on the monitor as it began to call ken’s number.  After a few rings a half asleep Ken answered.

“Hello,” Ken said, then saw Renamon, “Renamon what’s wrong?”

“Just tell me one thing Ken,” She asked in the calmest voice she could muster, “You’re going out there to destroy them.  Not to study.  Not to bring them back but to wipe them out.”

“That’s the plan,” he said as he whipped sleep from his eyes.

“Okay I’m in,” she said, then turned off the video-device before Ken could speak further.

***

A huge gray battleship drifted silently through space toward the colony of LV-426, the name Sulaco panted in huge letters on her bow.  Inside the ship a locker door swung open as the ventilation kicked up an invisible breeze, a picture of a naked Angewomon taped to the inside.  Just past the lockers sat a series of cryo-chambers that held the crew of this warship. With protest, the computer monitor next to the first chamber flickered on and a list of names began to scroll, starting with the first occupant to the last.  The List reads:

Wargreymon

  Matsuki, Takato

            Kido, Joe

            Benden, Axel

Renamon

Flamedramon

Wong, Susie

Ichijoji, Ken

Yagami, Taichi (Tai)

Stingmon

Kashiro, Izumi (Izzy)

Ishida, Yamato (Matt)

Garudamon

Silphymon

Angemon

Soon the cryo-chambers begin to open and lights above the sleeping occupants flicker until they turn on.  Slowly the occupants begin to rise, stretching and yawning.

Renamon began to rub the back of her neck as she heard the occupant next to her, groan.

“They ain’t paying us enough for this man.” Flamedramon hissed

“Not enough to have to wake up to your ugly muzzle,” Susie Wong said.

“What,” he blinked as he looked over his shoulder at the girl, “is that a joke?”

“I wish it were,” she shook her head.

Flame then turned toward the others and saw Axel Benden sit up, “Yo’ Benden!” he called out  “Man you look like I feel.”

“Alright sweethearts,” Wargreymon said as he stood and surveyed his troops, “What are you waiting for breakfast in bed?  It’s another glorious day in the Corp. A day in the Corp. is like a day on the farm. Every meal is a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune!  Every formation a parade! God I love the Corp.!”

“Good for you sir,” Angemon called out.

Yamato Ishida stood up then began to hop up and down saying, “Damn this floor is freezing!”

“What do you want me to do, fetch you your slippers,” War said to him.

“Gee would you sir?” Matt sneered, “I’d really like that,”

“Look into my eyes,” War said then turned toward everyone else and called out, “Fall in people. Let’s go!”

“I hate this job,” Tai groaned.

As everyone headed for their lockers War yelled out, “First assembly is in ten people so shag it!”

Each person complained about something or another.  Garudamon began to do chin-ups while others began to dress.  She then turned toward her left and saw Renamon dressing.

“Hey,” she said toward Silphymon, “Who’s sleeping beauty?”

“She’s supposed to be some kind of consultant,” Silphy shrugged, “apparently she saw an alien once.”

“Whoopy-f**king-doo,” Matt said as he dressed.

Soon Flame came over and both Garudamon and he were doing chin-ups.

            “Hey Garudamon,” Matt asked.

            “Yeah,” she said.

“I know you’re a girl but have you ever been mistaken for a man,” Matt said.

            “No,” she blinked, “Have you?”

“Alright Garudamon,” Flame said with a smile then placed a hand on her shoulder, “You’re just too bad.”

She gave him a playful slap across the face then went to her locker to change.

***

At the mess hall everyone gathered their food Ken, Joe and Renamon all sat at one table while everyone else sat at another.  Matt gathered his food then grabbed a seat by War.

“Hey sir,” he said,” What’s the mission?”

“It’s a rescue mission, you’ll love it…” he smiled “There’s some juicy colonist’s daughters who are coming of age and it’s up to us to save them from their virginity.”

            Flame said, “Dumbass colonists.”

Rena shook her head as they all joked around.

“What’s this shit supposed to be,” Takato asked as he threw something large and yellow onto his plate.

“I think its cornbread,” Tai said.

“Eat up it’s good for you boy,” Axel told him with a grin.

“Hey,” Tai said to Matt, “Sure wouldn’t mind getting me some more of that Kubimon poontang. You remember that time?”

“f**king-A I do,” Matt cheered as the two touched fists.

“Yeah,” Takato started, “but the one you had was a male!”

Everyone at the table laughed but Tai then broke in saying, “It doesn’t matter when it’s a Kubimon.”

Matt turned and saw Izzy giving out part of his food.

“Hey Izzy,” Matt said, “Do the thing with the knife man?”

“Matt please,” Izzy tried to decline.

“Ah come on man,” Matt said as he held the knife out to Izzy.

Flamedramon quietly moved behind Ishida while Izzy, after taking the blade, flipped the knife about with his hand. Izzy then set his left hand down on the table, but suddenly Flame grabbed Ishida left hand by the wrist and moved it forward under Izzy’s.

“Hey man what are you doing,” Ishida blinked in surprise.

“Shut up,” Flame said, “Don’t move. Ok Izzy… go.”

Izzy then placed his hand on top of Ishida.

“Not me man,” Ishida began to sweat.

“Yeah you,” Flame said, “Do it Izzy.”

“Izzy,” Matt was now in a panic.

            “Trust me,” Izzy whispered.

He started to stab the space between their fingers, going slowly at first but gradually getting faster and faster.  All the while Ishida was screaming with wide eyes as Izzy continued to increase the speed until the knife was a blur… then he stopped.

“Thank you,” Izzy said as he handed the knife back to Ishida with a smile.

“Enjoy your meal,” Flame said as he slapped Ishida on the shoulder.

“That wasn’t funny man,” Ishida moaned.

Izzy walked over toward the table at the front of the room, allowing everyone who wanted something to get what they needed.

“Looks like the new lieutenant is too good to eat with the rest of us grunts,” Axel quipped as he ate.

“The boy definitely has a corn cob up his ass,” Tai remarked.

Izzy sat down at the head table, offering corn bread to all there. Yet soon he felt that something was wrong and while examining his fingers… much to his dismay he noticed a white liquid dripping from his thumb.

“I thought you never missed Izzy,” Joe said.

Renamon turned and saw the liquid and suddenly freaked, “You never told me there would an android on board” she snarled as she looked to Ken “why not?”
“It never occurred to me,” Ken blinked,” It’s standard practice to carry synthetics with us.”

“I prefer the term artificial person myself,” Izzy said as he wiped the liquid on his shirt, “Is there a problem?”
“I’m sorry,” Ken sighed while trying to explain, “I can’t believe I…on Rena’s last trip the synth… the artificial person malfunction.”

            “Malfunctioned?” Rena said sharply.

“There were some accidents,” Ken said quietly, “and a couple deaths.”

“I’m shocked,” Izzy blinked, “was it an older model.”

“Part of the Andromon series,” ken nodded.

“Well that explains it,” Izzy said as he turned toward Rena, “The Andromons were always a bit unstable. That could never happen with me. It is impossible for me to harm or by mission harm anyone.”

Rena stared back him with a certain bit of hatred in her eyes.

“Are you sure you don’t want anything,” Izzy said as he moved the tray of cornbread toward her.

Rena quickly knocked the tray out of his hands and onto the floor attracting everyone’s attention.

“Just stay the f**k away from you got it,” She said angrily.

Izzy not exactly sure what happened went to pick up the fallen tray.

“I guess she doesn’t like the food,” Tai said with a smile.

***

Later, the marines were in combat training when Joe, War, Ken and Rena walked toward them.

“Squad,” War called out,” Attention! Officer on deck!”

The squad quickly snapped to attention until Joe said, “As you were.”

The squad relaxed and moved toward to back.

“Morning marines,” Joe said, “I’m sorry we weren’t able to brief you at Gateway but…”

“Sir,” Ishida asked as he raised his hand.

“What is it Benden,” Joe said.

“Ishida sir,” Matt said then pointed toward Axel, who was smiling, “He’s Benden.”

            “What’s your question,” Joe asked.

“Is this going to be a stand up fight or another bug hunt,” Ishida asked.

“All we know is that we lost contact with the colony and that a Xenomorph may be involved,” Joe said.

“Excuse me sir,” Tai said, “a what?”

            “A Xenomorph,” Joe repeated.

“It’s a bug hunt,” Benden sighed with a roll of his eyes, “What exactly are we dealing with?”

“Renamon,” Joe said as he turned the floor over to the fox.

“I’ll tell you what I know,” Rena said, “We set down on LV-426. One of our crewmembers was brought back with something attached to his face, some kind of parasite. We tried to get rid of it but it wouldn’t come off. Later is seemed to come off on it’s own and die. Mimi seemed fine…we were having dinner and…it must have laid something in her chest, some kind of embryo…she started coughing and…”

“Look,” Garudamon said as he began to get annoyed, “All I need to know is one thing…where they are.”

            “Right on,” Flame said.

“Any time, any where,” Garudamon said.

“Yeah,” Ishida quipped, “Someone said monster and she thought they were talking about her.”

“F**k you,” She said as she flipped him off.

“Any time, Any where,” Ishida said.

“Are you finished,” Rena snapped, her temper starting to flair.

            Everyone quickly quieted down.

“I hope you’re right,” Rena hissed at Garudamon, “I really do.”

“Okay,” Joe said, “We have Rena’s report on disc so I suggest you…”

“Because just one of those thing managed to destroy my crew in less than 24 hours, and if the colonists have found that ship… then there’s no tell how many of them have been exposed.  Do you understand?”

“Alright,” Joe said, “we have it on disc so make sure you look at it. Any questions?”

Ishida raised his hand with a smile.

“What is it private,” Joe asked.

“How do I get out of this chicken shit outfit,” he said.

“You secure that shit,” War said.

“Alright,” Joe nodded “Now listen up.  I want this thing to go smooth and by the numbers. I want DCS and tactical database assimilation by 0830. Ordnance loading, weapons detail and drop-ship prep will have seven hours… Now move it!”

“Alright sweethearts,” War said, “You heard the man and you know the drill, assholes and elbows! Ishida come here… get you ass over here now!”

***

Later that day, the colonial marines were finishing up all weapons preparations.  Wargreymon quickly surveyed each situation.

“I don’t care if you are short Ishida,” War said, “Get it done now!”

“Love you too sir,” Ishida joked.

“Corporal Wong,” War said, “I want this loading lock sealed…Now!”

            “I’m on it,” she responded.

He turned and saw Takato driving one of the loaders and loading some missiles into the drop-ship. A loader resembled something like a simple mech. The pilot would get on and use the mech to carry heavy thing with the pincers at the end of the mech’s arms. In essence the loader was like a forklift.

“How many more you got Takato,” War asked.

“Last one sir,” Takato said as he loaded the missile into the ship.

“Alright get it done,” War smiled as he walked toward Benden to check to protocol.

At that moment Renamon stepped out into the bay and surveyed the organized chaos before her. Everyone had a job to do, and were doing it quite well… everyone but her. Spying Axel and War talking, she walked toward the two, “Hi.” She said to get their attention, “I feel like a fifth heel around here. Is there anything I can do?”

“I don’t know,” War scoffed, “-Is- there anything you can do?”

“I can drive that loader,” Rena said, taking up the challenge. “I have a class two rating.”

War shrugged his shoulders before waving a hand at the unused loader, “Be my guest.”

Rena hopped up on the mech and began to strap herself in. With leg and body locked in place, she was ready. She then pressed a button and a yellow flashing light at the top of the loader turned on, showing it was in uses. She then grabbed the levers on each arm and slowly brought them up, this also raised the arms of the loader. She checked the pincers making sure they could rotate, and open and close properly. With everything ready she started to move toward a large crate. War and Axel watched her impressed with her skills.

Rena picked up the crate and turned toward them and with a sly smile asked, “Where do you want it?”

Axe and War laughed then War nodded, “Bay-12… please.”
