Chapter 3
Matt stepped outside the airport and breathed in the humid air. He looked up toward the sky; dark clouds were nearly blocking out the late afternoon sun. He stood in line waiting for the downtown bus. On the flight home he had decided that he loved Mimi, and with some luck and his gift he brought back, he might have her. The bus pulled up in front of him and the doors slid open. He stepped inside and off he went to his house.
When he got home, he tossed his luggage in his room and plopped down in front of the computer. “You’ve got mail!” Matt glared at the computer. He always’ hated that damn computer talk. He scanned though all the junk mail and found a letter from Mimi. His heard did a double beat as it loaded.
Hey Matt, Hope you’re trip is going good. Well that sounds stupid cuz you’ll probably read this when you get back. Sooooo hope you had a good trip, stop by once and a while….

Matt finished reading the letter and sat up. Still nothing of the C.D. ‘Well at least she invited me over.’ Matt thought glumly. He sighed and got up from the computer ‘ I want some ice cream’ He walked toward the fridge and pulled out the ice cream box, ate half, put it back, and fell asleep on the couch in the foyer.
When he woke up the next day and glanced out the window. Rain. He laid his head back down on the pillow. It rained all morning till 1 in the afternoon. After he woke up at ten he worked on some summer assignments for school and left for a bike ride at two in the afternoon. ‘Well might as well take her up on her offer.’ Matt thought to himself. He pulled his headset on, he didn’t know why he took his hatred C.D. but he like the metal, and it kept him going. He tapped his thumbs to “Last Resort” as he sped down the road. He had fun going to Germany but it felt good to be home. He took a detour to get to her house; he needed to work off some of the food he ate over there. After biking for an hour he peddled toward Mimi’s house. As he approached the house it looked like no one was home, but Matt was thirsty, and he did want to talk to her. So he stopped by anyways. He rang the doorbell, waited a minute, and then her face appeared in the window next to the door. Thirsty as he was he hopped back on the bike and headed toward Sora’s house. When he got there she was outside. “Hey Matt! How was Germany?” She asked as she saw him coming her driveway. “Good, but I need water!” She walked toward the door, “Ok come on in.”
After getting a cup of water Matt followed her into her room. They lightly talked for a while about the trip and her summer until Sora asked Matt if he liked Mimi still. Matt put his finished glass down. “Yeah, I still do.” Sora looked edgy. “what’s wrong?” Matt asked. “She, she’s going out with Izzy.” As Matt heard the sentence his heart went cold and his head felt heavy. Then a great rage flowed through his blood, he tried to hide it. “oh ok” He took a swig from his glass forgetting that he had finished it. “Yeah a lot has changed since you had left” Sora said, getting up from her bed. Matt looked at her. “Like what?” “for one I’m going out with Tai, and Ken and Kari are going out.” ‘damn a lot has changed.’ Matt thought. He sat there thinking. How could Izzy just take a girl, that he knew his best friend liked, and asked her out. Matt couldn’t understand. He got up, mumbled goodbye to Sora, and left. The whole bike ride home he was in a daze, he couldn’t think about anything but what Sora had told him. And if it was true, then why did the sign he saw from god have Mimi’s name on it, he didn’t understand. That night he cried himself to a deep sleep, filled with anguish and pain.
The next day he went to the movies to try to get his mind off what Sora had said. He walked slowly down to the dollar theater, because he was always broke. Right before he reached the theaters it started to rain. ‘Shit, just my luck’ he bought a ticket and walked into the movie as the previews were starting. The whole theater was filled except some seats in the top row. He walked up the stairs and plopped down next to two teens his age. As the movie went on the teens began to make out. ‘Just what I needed, to stop thinking about love and shit like that.’ He moved his hand next to his head to block the view but soon the guy stood up and went to go get popcorn. As he was walking down the stairs, he looked back, and the face was that of Tai’s. Something in Matt’s mind clicked. He looked at the girl sitting next to him. It wasn’t Sora it, was someone else. Question and anger flared in Matt’s mind as the movie continued. When he saw Tai walking back up the stairs with popcorn, that’s when Matt decided to leave. Passing Tai on the stairs he stuck his foot out in front him. Tai fell backwards tumbling down the stairs with popcorn pouring out. Faces turned in his direction but Matt calmly walked down the stairs. Passing Tai, who was standing up from a pile of popcorn, Matt muttered to himself. “Bastard.”
Finding himself sticking the hatred C.D. back into his C.D. player he hoped this bike ride would clear his mind. As he biked his usual route he found himself detouring off and passing in the area that Izzy lived in. As he rode down Izzy’s block he saw someone outside. He slowed down and pulled up Izzy’s driveway. Izzy looked up from where he was sitting. “Hey Matt.” Izzy quietly said. Matt got off his bike. “I need some answers.” Matt said sternly. Izzy looked at him. “She wouldn’t let me come in.” Izzy said. Matt looked at him. He knew who he was talking about. Mimi. “Why should I care?” Izzy stood up. There was another car there. One I thought I recognized but I wasn’t sure. And she just said I couldn’t come in. Not even being nice about it, just short and crude.” Matt looked at his friend. Yeah he wanted to deck him because he stole his girl, but some reason he spared Izzy. He seemed hurt. Then something formed in his mind. Tai cheated on Sora, could Mimi be cheating on Izzy?
