No One Made Me Feel This Way

Ok, I’m crazy about Ray + Mariah, but I thought that I’d try something different.

Rated PG-13, bit of kissing and swearing.

It is two years since the end of the Russian Tournament, and the Bladebreakers are practicing for a Tournament in America. Kai is really driving them hard. When Mr. Dickinson introduces them to his grand-niece, Kai feels something happen in him that he can’t explain. Will he swallow his pride and tell her how he feels? And does she feel the same way?

“Speech”

Here we go guys.

“Come on Tyson, concentrate!” yelled Kai as he threw Tyson’s beyblade out of the bowl for the third time.

“Calm down dude!” said Tyson. “Jesus, what is your problem?”

“My problem is that we won’t even qualify, the way your bloody going.”

“Look, give him a break, Kai. He can practice later,” said Ray, the voice of reason.

“Ok, take ten, but no more,” said Kai, annoyed.

Just at that moment, a very breathless Max ran up to them.

“Ray!” he said, chest heaving. “Mariah’s here. She wants to see you.”

“Great, more distractions,” muttered Kai. He wasn’t against Ray’s and Mariah’s relationship, but Ray was so smitten with her, he hardly thought about anything else and usually found it hard to concentrate. Kai watched him running into the building. The rest sniggered.

“God, what an idiot,” smirked Tyson.

“Oh grow up Tyson, he’s in love. It’s a natural thing,” said Max, but was unable to hide a smile.

“Catch me ever falling in love,” said Tyson, who was at that precise moment watching a very attractive blonde girl walking out of the stadium.

Max rolled his eyes. Then he saw Mariah and Ray walking towards them, arms round each other, both beaming. Tyson’s smirk returned.

“Hello, you guys!” said Mariah as they walked up to them. Ray didn’t say anything, his entire attention focused on his girlfriend, who was looking fantastic. Even Tyson’s mouth dropped.

She was tanned, hair down, wearing a white and pink striped spaghetti top, a short, dusty pink skirt and snow white leather boots.

“I’ve just come back from a holiday in Italy,” she explained. “I’ve decided to change my style a bit.”

“A bit?” whispered Tyson to Max, eyebrow raised.

“You look gorgeous!” said Max, throwing Tyson a dirty look.

“Yes, yes, yes,” said Kai impatiently. “But we really need to practice Mariah and I dare say, Ray needs to be focused right now.”

“Yes, of course, I understand,” she nodded. “I’ll see you later, Ray.”

And with that, she gave Ray a quick kiss on the lips, and trotted off.

Ray watched her until she disappeared behind the building’s double doors.

“Isn’t she just… just… isn’t she?” he said.

Tyson sweatdropped, Max beamed and Kai…

“Humph!”

“Ray, when you’ve come back down to Earth, you’ll see Mr. Dickinson’s coming.” said Tyson.

Ray turned around slowly.

“Great,” muttered Kai. “Will no one let us practice?”

Mr. Dickinson bounced up to them.

“How’s practice going?” he enquired.

“It’s not,” said Kai.

“Oh, by the way Ray,” said Mr. Dickinson, pretending not to have heard Kai. “I just saw your lady-friend, Mariah, on my way here. I must say, she’s a stunning piece of work. You’re a very lucky man.”

“I know,” smiled Ray, eyes misting over again.

“Oh, by the way boys…” began Mr. Dickinson.

“Uncle, Uncle!” came a voice and the Bladebreakers turned to see a girl, about Kai’s age, running towards them. She was very striking. Here hair was just a long black sweep that came right past her shoulders, huge, almond shaped green eyes that twinkled mischievously, bright coral red lips and quite a pale face. She was dressed in a black, figure-hugging cat-suit and on her feet were silver sparkly stilettos. All in all, she was quite stunning.

“Boys, I’d like you to meet Serena, my grand niece and your new team member!” beamed Mr. Dickinson.

This caused a few raised eyebrows, and everyone turned to look at Kai, expecting some kind of protest. But he looked as though he had been struck by lightening. Kai felt like some huge explosion had just taken place in the pit of his stomach. He stared at her. There was something about her. The way she moved, the way her green eyes twinkled and shone. Everything about her, from her face to her perfect, curvy figure had him thunderstruck. When he realized he had been silent and staring for quite a length of time, he quickly regained his composure.

“We’ll be proud to have her in our team,” he said, voice unusually high.

Tyson, Max and Ray were dumbstruck at Kay’s reaction. He usually would start to protest and decline, saying that they didn’t need a new team mate.

Mr. Dickinson beamed. The boys immediately started to introduce themselves.

“I’m Tyson,” said Tyson, pushing others out of the way so he could shake her hand first.

“Oh, you’re the one who eats all the time!” she said. “Uncle told me all about your appetite, but hey, you don’t seem to put on any weight!”

Tyson couldn’t help turning a brilliant scarlet at the compliment before he was pushed away by Max.

“My name’s Max,” he said breathlessly.

“Oh, I’ve heard all about you, you own a Draciel, don’t you?”

“How did you know?”

“It’s Uncle’s favorite bitbeast!”

“I’m Ray, nice to meet you,” Ray was the only one who spoke calmly.

“Ray Kon, right? You’re going out with that Mariah from the White Tigers, aren’t you?”

“Yeah. Do you know her?”

“I’ve met her a couple of times, and all the time she was raving about you, you two must be really in love!”

“Yeah, I’m a lucky guy!”

“Who’s the guy with blue hair?”
“That’s old Sourpuss,” replied Tyson.

“Alias Kai,” said Ray.

“Well hello Kai,” she said holding out her hand and giving him her prettiest smile.

Kai shook her hand in silence.

“Oooh, strong and silent, are you?”

Kai made a series of indistinguishable noises.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Nice… to… meet… you,” he said.

“Oh, so you can talk!”

“He can be a damn pain in the arse,” said Tyson, butting in.

Kai was helpless. It was so unfair. He wanted to talk to her, to get to know her, to impress her but it felt like his tongue had fallen off.

“Let’s see your beyblade, then!” said Ray, breaking the uncomfortable silence. Kai shot him a grateful look.

Serena took a medium-sized beyblade out of her pocket. It was black, with a silver unicorn-like bitbeast at the front.

“Wow, what bitbeast is that?” asked Max, wide eyed.

“It’s a Silverray,” she answered proudly.

“Wow, totally awesome!” said Tyson.

“That’s from Russia, isn’t it?” asked Kai suddenly, causing everyone to jump.

“Yes,” said Serena, bemused.

Kai didn’t say any more.

“Hey, where’s Uncle?” she said suddenly. The others hadn’t realized that while they were chatting, Mr. Dickinson had left, leaving Serena alone with the Bladebreakers.

“So, anyone want to challenge me?” she said, her eyes twinkling.

Tyson stepped up immediately.

“I will.”

“OK, suit yourself,” she said as they made their way to the bowl.

Ray volunteered to referee.

“Three… Two… One… LET IT RIP!!!” he yelled.

Both competitors released their beyblades.

“Silverray, attack!”

“And Serena is straight in there! Wow, look at that blade, I’ve never seen one spin so fast…” commentated Ray.

At that precise moment there was a huge thunder-like sound as a huge silver unicorn erupted from Serena’s blade. Tyson stood, awestruck.

“Silverray, use your Thunder attack, NOW!”

A there was a huge explosion, causing everyone to shield their eyes as a blinding yellow light exploded from the beyblade.

After a few moments, the smoke cleared, and in the middle of the bowl was one beyblade, silver with a silver unicorn-like bitbeast on the front. Tyson’s beyblade was lying some thirty feet away.

“What was THAT?!!” exclaimed Max.

“That, was the full extent of the powers of a Silverray,” said Serena calmly.

“WOW!!!” said Tyson. “Your one tough beyblader, it was an honor to battle you.” He bent down and kissed her on the hand, she giggled and whacked him playfully over the head with her free hand.

“You silver-tongued rascal, let go of my hand!”

All the Bladebreakers crowded around her, with the exception of Kai. She politely thanked them for their praises and seemed eager to speak to Kai. But before she could, Tyson had swept her up into his arms, carrying her away, as she giggled helplessly and yelled:

“Put me down, you great lump, PUT ME DOWN!!!”

Max followed them, but Ray stayed behind, noting the look on Kai’s face.

“What’s up, dude?” he said.

“Who is she?” said Kai, a faraway look in his eyes.

“Serena, grand-nice of Mr. Dickinson,” replied Ray.

“No, I meant… Oh, never mind.”

“She seems greatly taken to Tyson!”

“I know,” said Kai, frowning.

“Oh, I don’t think she’ll be much of a distraction…”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“What do you mean then? You’re talking in riddles.”

“Oh, forget about it. I’m going back to the hotel, come on.”

“Well, actually…”
Kai sighed.

“Your meeting Mariah, aren’t you?”

“Mmm.”

“See you then, have a good time.”

They said goodbye and went their separate ways.

Kai lay on his bed, his arms behind his head. What was happening to him? Who was this Serena? Why was she making him feel this way? It was painful to sit next to her at dinner, watching her flirt with Tyson. And HIM! He couldn’t keep his hands off her, and she seemed to enjoy it terribly.

Kai turned over miserably. He could hear them, laughing in the next room. He eventually fell asleep.

~Serena’s POV~

Wow, what a day! The Bladebreakers are fantastic team mates. Not like… Oh never mind, why go into depressing stuff when I’m so happy, happy, happy!

Tyson’s a really great guy! He’s really funny and sweet.

Max is very generous and understanding, I really like him as he’s so sensitive.

Ray spent half of dinner smooching with Mariah. It can really put one off one’s appetite, i.e. me. Though she’s really lucky to have a guy like him, caring, loving, tender. I’m really happy for them.

Kai…

Kai…

The name that has been resounding in my head all day. As soon as I saw him, something exploded inside me. Those eyes, those arms, that face. I think I’m in love with him. Love, such a misused word… yes… I love him… I know it’s funny to feel this way as I’ve only known him for a few hours. But it’s true.

Oh, well. He probably doesn’t even feel the same way. Though, saying that, he was always looking at me in a weird way. It made shivers run down my spine as his striking dark eyes bore into me. Straight into my soul…

Oh god, my cheeks are hot enough to fry a couple eggs. I think I’ll go for a walk, they have really nice grounds at the hotel.

Kai woke up, it was dusk, and the sun had just set over the horizon. His head was aching, it was stiflingly hot in his room. Rubbing sleep from his eyes, he decided to get some fresh air and maybe try to sort out his feelings.

As he stepped out into the gardens, he immediately felt better. A nightingale sang somewhere and the last few rays of sun were disappearing into the sky. Then he heard other singing. A sweet voice ringing through the air…

The feelings I felt as I stared into your eyes,

Sent shivers down my spine,

Your voice telling me sweet lies,

I lose all sense of time.

He set off in the direction from where it was coming from.

You opened the door,

Straight into my heart,

And disappear did all

The fears I felt before.

He turned around a tree and stopped, rigid.

Serena was standing by a pond that was place right in the middle of the grounds. She turned as she felt someone’s eyes on her. They both stood looking at each other.

~Kai’s POV~

I stood there, staring into those beautiful green eyes. I just managed to stop myself running towards her, taking her in my arms and kissing her. I couldn’t suppress the desire I was feeling. The desire to touch her, feel her lips against mine… I couldn’t stand it…

“Hi,” said Serena.

“Hi,” replied Kay, his striking dark eyes on her, reading every curve, every line, every detail.

“How are you?” she said as he walked up to her. She felt herself tremble.

“Alright.”

“At least you’re talking now, you hardly said anything at dinner. So far, all I know about you is that your name’s Kai and your captain of the Bladebreakers.”

“There’s not much too know.”

“Everyone has their story. Here, come, sit by me.”

She sat down and gestured for him to do likewise.

“You and Tyson seem to get along great,” he said.

“Yeah, he’s a fantastic guy.”

Kai felt his heart sinking, straight down into his feet.

“I think he’s got a thing about you, you know.”

“Nah, I’m not his type. He’s not mine anyway.”

“No?” Kai felt himself almost smiling with joy.

“No, but things might change. Opposites attract.” Mentally, Serena slapped herself.

Kai tried hard to hide the disappointment in his voice as he changed the subject.

“I know that song you were singing…”

“Oh crap! You heard me?!”

“Yeah, you’ve got a really attractive voice.”

“Whatever.”

“No, you seriously do, I’m not kidding.”

“You said you know the song?”

“Yeah, it’s Russian. ‘The Blue-eyed Boy’.”

“How did you know?”

“I was brought up in Russia.”

“No kidding, I’m Russian.”

“Serena’s not a Russian name.”

“I know, it was the name of my great grandmother, who was American.”

“Which part of Russia?”

“A village near St Petersburg, you?”

“In the East, near Kamchatka.”

“So…” came a sneering voice.

They turned around, a boy, aged about eighteen was smirking at them. He had small cruel eyes, thin lips and dark hair.

“After another one now, Serena?”

Kai looked up at her. Serena had gone even whiter than usual. Kai noticed that she was trembling slightly.

“What are you doing here Andrei?”

“I’m here for the tournament. I’ve joined the Snow Leopards.”

“You…”

“What’s the matter, doll?

“Don’t you call me…”

Kai couldn’t help feeling extreme dislike to Andrei. He turned to Serena.

“Who is this guy?”

“Nobody…”

“Oooh, someone’s in a bad mood, what’s the matter doll, don’t you remember the fun we had together?” His eyes flashed evilly.

Serena said nothing, her eyes radiating hatred.

“I’ll see you at the dance tomorrow, where something slinky… doll.” With that, he sauntered off.

Serena’s fists were clenched, her lips had almost disappeared into her face.

“Serena?” Kai said gently, worry plastered all over his face.

“Kai…”

“Who is he?”

Serena stared into his eyes, a tear falling down her beautiful face. Kai wiped it away. She flinched when he touched her. And before she knew it, she was pouring her heart out.

“I grew up in a small village, I didn’t get on very well with the other girls. They had this image of how a girl should be. A housewife, who would do all the cooking, cleaning. I was too wild. I disobeyed my parents, often sneaking off behind their backs.

The final straw came two years ago, when I got betrothed to this guy. The Elders thought it would tame me. It didn’t. I ran away, aged fourteen.

I traveled south to Moscow, where I met up with this Beyblading team called the Snow Leopards. I had learnt to Beyblade in secret in the village. It was considered a man’s sport.

Anyway, they saw I had a skill, so they took me on. Though I wasn’t treated very well. They were sexist bastards actually. Then I met this guy. Andrei. He was different then. He acted like he really cared about me. But he was from a rival team, the Snow Leopard’s worst enemy, the Vultures. The team captain of the Leopards, Dimitri, found out that I was in love with him. He made me choose between the Snow Leopards and Andrei. Being genuinely in love, I quit everything for him. Only, when I came to him telling him I did so, he turned on me. It turned out he was only using me to find out about the Leopard’s strengths and weaknesses in battle. I was just a part of his plan. Anyway, I got really angry and told him exactly what I thought of him, he turned really nasty then. Shouted all sorts of thing’s at me, I’m a slag, I’d fall for anyone, that sort of thing. But nothing prepared me for what happened next… Oh, Kai. He... He…”

Serena started to sob uncontrollably. Kai put his arm on her shoulder, she flinched again.

“He raped me Kai. And left. I was hurt, dreadfully hurt. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know of any relatives apart from Uncle, but he lived in Japan.

But I didn’t give up. I couldn’t go back to the Leopards, so I decided I’d get a job. I started working as a waitress. I lied about my age. But I saved up, until, finally, I could go to Japan. I arrived a month ago. Apart from Uncle, you’re the only person who knows. Please Kai, don’t tell any one…”

Helpless, she dropped her head on his shoulder, unable to stem the tears. Kai, put his arm around her, she didn’t flinch this time.

“You probably think I’m this stupid idiot who couldn’t control her feelings… who fell for the lowest of the low…”

“Serena, I don’t think that at all. You’re the most amazing girl I’ve ever met, if anything, your story deepened my respect for you. Love is a thing people can’t control. Now stop crying.” He gently lifted her head, so that she was looking straight at him. Even when she was crying, she was beautiful. He wiped away her tears, stood up and taking her by the hand, helped her up too. They walked in silence back to the hotel.

It was a beautiful warm evening. The stars were twinkling up above, and a crescent moon floated above them, turning Kai’s hair a brilliant silvery-blue. He held onto her hand, his fingers gently entwining with hers.

They stopped outside Serena’s room. She smiled at him, obviously feeling much better.

“Thanks for everything Kai. You’re a really great guy. I feel like I can really rely on you. We have that Tournament Opening Dance tomorrow, I’ll see you there. I need to go into town in the morning, if you don’t mind me missing practice.”

“Of course not, Serena, take all the time you need, I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow evening. And don’t worry, I won’t breathe a word to anyone about our conversation.”

“I’m so grateful for it all Kai. You’re a really great friend. Any girl would be lucky to have you.”

With that, she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. She smiled again and walked into her room, shutting the door.

Kai touched the place where she had kissed him, not sure of what had just happened. Eventually he managed to tear himself away from her door and walked slowly to his room.

~Serena’s POV~

I couldn’t believe it when I saw that bastard standing there, a smirk plastered all over his big ugly face. I was dumbstruck. He had joined them, the Leopards… has he got no conscience? Probably not.

I still can’t get over Kai holding my hand. He was so caring, so understanding. It was all I could do to stop myself from throwing my arms around his neck and telling him how much I love him…I was so stupid, calling him a friend, I should have told there and then, after I kissed him. When I’m with him I don’t feel afraid anymore. It felt so good to kiss him, so good…

~Kai’s POV~

Her story shocked me. She was so strong, she coped with it all on her own. She asked me if I thought she was an idiot after she’d finished. I told her that my respect for her had deepened.

Oh Serena, not only my respect, but my love, my desire, my passion, my obsession…

I held her hand as we walked back to the hotel. She was trembling. I started wondering whether she felt the same way but my hopes were shattered when, saying goodbye to me, she said I was a really great friend. That’s all I am, nothing more, just a friend. Then she kissed me and went inside her room. I had to stop myself from bashing the door down and take her in my arms.

Serena…

Serena…

The Bladebreakers didn’t see Serena the next day and none of them, apart from Kai, knew what had become of her. They practiced most of the day and then, towards the end of the afternoon went back to get ready for the Tournament Opening Dance. Kenny arrived, after spending a week’s holiday in France.

After getting ready, with all but Ray and Kai moaning about suits and dances, they made their way down to the Ballroom.

As they entered, quite a lot of girls’ heads turned, especially in Kai’s and Ray’s direction. But neither paid any attention to it. Ray had gone over to join Mariah at the other side of the room.

Kai’s head, however, was turned the other way, as were most of the other male’s in the room.

At the top of the stairs stood Serena. As stunning as ever.

Her long black hair was brought up high on her head, in the middle of which was a silver, diamond tiara. She wore a long, floor length, strapless black dress and black elbow-length gloves. Around her neck was a silver chain from which hung a brilliant green emerald, which brought out the color of her eyes, which she had outlined, making them even bigger. Blood  red lipstick covered her lips and a tiny bit of blusher added color to her cheeks. On her feet were a pair of  black, high-heeled sandals. She smiled and all the men came running. But she didn’t seem to be paying much attention to them. Instead, she descended the stairs, smiling and declining politely from any invitations to dance. She tripped on the last stair. Kai caught her just in time. He seemed totally dumbstruck by her appearance, as were Tyson, Max and Kenny.

“Hi, guys!” she called brightly as Kai lead her through the crowd of men.

“WOW!” said Max

“You must be Serena!” was all Kenny managed to say. Tyson however, pushed his way through.

“Excuse me Mademoiselle,” he said and kissed her hand. “But could one so lowly as myself  request a dance from one so stunningly beautiful and charming as yourself?”

“Why, certainly young man. It would be my pleasure,” giggled Serena and let Tyson lead her to the dance-floor.

Kai watched Tyson weave a path with her through the floor, resentment highly visible in his eyes. He watched them for a bit, until the song finished and was just about to go over and ask her to dance himself but she excused herself and went outside. Tyson came bounding up.

“Am I a charmer or am I a charmer?” he said proudly.

Kenny and Max were shaking with suppressed laughter, tears of mirth rolling down their cheeks.

“What?” said Tyson, as they walked over to the drinks counter. “WHAT?!”

Kai shook his head. For a fifteen-year-old, Tyson could still be so immature. He sighed and went out the door, into the grounds, to look for Serena.

He walked around the trees, there was no sign of her. He sighed and sat down. Just then, he heard a strangled sob. Recognizing Serena’s voice, he ran in the direction from where it was coming from, heart pounding. She was in trouble, he could feel it. He ran through the foliage until he came to the pond, and stopped dead.

Andrei, one hand holding Serena’s wrist, the other on her back undoing the zip at the back of her dress. He was grinning evilly, and she was sobbing, fright plastered all over her face as she struggled against him with her free hand.

Kai couldn’t stop himself. He ran towards Andrei…

WHAM!

Kai’s fist came into contact with Andrei’s face. Andrei staggered back, taken by surprise, a scarlet fountain pounding from his nose. He made furious moves towards Kai, until he was close enough and punched him in the stomach. Kai fell over, completely winded. Andrei went to finish him off, but Serena stepped between him and Kai’s writhing body.

“Don’t make me hurt you, doll!” he warned.

SMACK!

Serena had hit him right across his face.

“Don’t you dare call me that, you foul, evil bastard.”

“Ok then”, he snarled. “You’re a freaking slag who doesn’t know what to do with herself so she throws herself at random men…”

WHAM!

He didn’t get much further as Kai had got up and punched him in the face again. Andrei, staggered back a few paces, and with a dazed look on his face, collapsed into the pond.

Kai stood, chest heaving as he sucked in air hungrily. He turned to look at Serena, who was crying.

“Serena?”

She turned her face to him, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Are you alright?” he asked anxiously. She managed a watery smile.

“I should be asking you that, you took quite a blow there!”

“I’ll be fine,” said Kai.

“Let me see”, she said, gently lifting up his shirt. There was a large purple bruise where Andrei’s fist had come into contact with Kai’s stomach. Serena swore softly.

“I’ll be fine!” repeated Kai, pulling his shirt down.

“Kai, I don’t know how to thank you. He was trying to… again…”

“I know,” said Kai.

“Kai, you’re so fantastic. If only everyone had a friend like you…”

“FRIEND?!” Kai couldn’t help anymore, all the frustration over the last few days had been building up inside him and he couldn’t hold it in him anymore.

“Yes, you’re a special friend…”

“And what is Tyson then? More than a friend?!” he yelled.

“Kai, what…”

“Do you know what it’s like, watching you two, flirting, him all over you, and you enjoying every moment…”

“Kai!”

“Do have any idea what I’ve been feeling the last two days? Not knowing whether you felt the same way…”

“About what?!”

“I love you Serena, I LOVE YOU! I’m obsessed with you, I spend every waking moment thinking about you, I dream about you! Every time you’re near me, I’m using all my will power not take you in my arms, to kiss you, touch you, feel you. It’s a feeling that is so strong it frightens me. I thought we had a chance but then you keep going on about friendship, like yesterday night. You kissed me, leaving me confused. You torture me from inside, tugging at my heart, and then I hear you talking about friends and flirting with TYSON!”

He turned away, embarrassed by his outburst. He leaned heavily against a tree. Serena stared at him, she couldn’t believe it. She suddenly felt so happy.

She walked over to him. Gently, she touched his cheek with her hand. Taking his face in her hands, she turned it so that he was staring straight into her green eyes. Slowly, she leaned forward and pressed her mouth gently against his. He responded, slowly at first but building up speed. He let her tongue snake into his mouth as he did likewise. Slowly, his arms slid down and fixed themselves around her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. It felt so good to be in his arms at last.

They broke away.

“What do you mean by this?” he asked. She smiled.

“I only called you a friend because I didn’t know how you felt. I couldn’t risk losing you as a friend. It was all I ever wanted in a friendship.”

“And now?”

“It’s simply all I ever wanted.”

He smiled and pulled her in for another kiss, drawing her closer and wrapping his jacket around her. It was perfect. No one had ever made Kai feel like this before, he had her now and he would never let her go.

Over on the other side of the pond, Ray, Mariah, Kenny, Max and Tyson were watching.

“I wondered how long it would take them”, said Ray with a small smile.

“It’s so sweet, reminds me of us,” beamed Mariah at him

“Old Sourpuss, eh?” said Tyson. “Who would have thought it?”

“Yeah, Kai’s the last person I expected to act like this,” said Kenny.

“Oh, shut it”, said Max. “You’re spoiling the moment.”

All five fell silent. On the other side, Kai and Serena were still kissing. A crescent moon shone above them and crickets chirruped around. Stars glittered in a cloudless sky, but all this was lost on Kai and Serena, who were both completely content with each other’s presence.
